Thanks for the fixes.  It is not an error for a default device to be nil, or 
for a host API to have no devices.  It might be a bug/missing feature in the 
host API (OSS or ALSA), but you'll have to take that up with the real PortAudio 
guys.  It also might be a system configuration issue, but that's just a guess.

Do the other examples (noise, stereoSine, record, play) also fail for you?

The other examples has similar issues with version 19+svn20071022-3.2. However, 
they do work with latest trunk.

Fixed in revision eb0c19bc0b67.

If the examples work with the latest PortAudio then I won't change them.  I'd 
rather they remained simple.
