mpvpaper's Issues

'*' Does not select any output for some NVIDIA users

Hello, I'm having a strange issue, I cannot seem to get mpvpaper to play to all outputs using the '*' option.

I can select either of my monitors just fine with either HDMI-A-1 or HDMI-A-2, which will play the video as expected. However, if i use '' (i.e. mpvpaper '' /path/to/video) i get this message:

:/ sorry about this but we can't seem to find any output.

I'm not sure if it is relevant, but I am using the NVIDIA version included in the latest release. The normal version would just drop all frames. I'm using hyprland on Arch.

Am I using the * option wrong? I tried everything I could think of, but it seems to me that I am copying the command from the readme exactly.

Just for clarity, this works fine for me (same for HDMI-A-2):

$ mpvpaper -v HDMI-A-1 /d/walls/mvtest.mp4
[!] Output HDMI-A-2 (Ancor Communications Inc VC279 F6LMRS000492) not selected
[*] Output HDMI-A-1 (Iiyama North America PL2783Q 1142964701489) selected
[*] OpenGL 4.6 EGL context created
 (+) Video --vid=1 (*) (h264 1920x1080 60.000fps)
 (+) Audio --aid=1 (*) (aac 2ch 48000Hz)
[*] Loaded /d/walls/mvtest.mp4
AO: [pulse] 48000Hz stereo 2ch float
VO: [libmpv] 1920x1080 yuv420p
AV: 00:00:10 / 00:00:53 (20%) A-V: 0.000 Cache: 42s/104MB

but this fails:

$ mpvpaper -v '*' /d/walls/mvtest.mp4
[!] Output HDMI-A-2 (Ancor Communications Inc VC279 F6LMRS000492) not selected
[!] Output HDMI-A-1 (Iiyama North America PL2783Q 1142964701489) not selected
[-] :/ sorry about this but we can't seem to find any output.

The asterisk should select both outputs right?

GPU Memory Leak ??

Using mpvpaper with Hyprland and a 1660Ti. Typically mpvpaer will idle at 200MB of GPU memory, but occasionally that value will balloon to like 6GB causing other programs to crash. Could be a WM issue? Idk, I don't know anything about display programs

SIGFPE when running

I'm on Arch Linux (kernel 6.0.10, Wayland 1.21.0) with an NVIDIA GPU running driver 525.60.11. Not sure if this is a mpvpaper-related issue, or if it's only MPV/libva/NVIDIA. The weird part is that the regular mpv command runs and plays videos just fine...

$ mpvpaper -o "vo=libmpv gpu-context=auto gpu-api=auto" -vv 'DP-1' my_video.mkv

Cannot load libcuda.so.1

The programm stay stuck and nothing appear on the screen. I see it loading my cpu

I also tried it with an NVIDIA gpu and the nouveau driver on another computer and I get the same output

Video stops displaying after monitor restart

I have been at this for a couple days now and could use some outside opinion on the matter.

Steps to reproduce

  1. start mpvpaper
  2. restart monitor either physically or with dpms

My findings

  • First I can safely say this is NOT mpv's fault. As the original glpaper exhibits the same behavior.
  • I also feel like I can rule out OpenGL because I found no error in the debug and qt-video-wlr ( which doesn't use OpenGL ) has the same problem too.
  • swaybg does not have this problem, but I couldn't find anything in the code that would be helpful.
  • mpv will drop all frames after the monitor restart. The reason being that:
    eglSwapBuffers(egl_display, egl_surface);

is freezing within the main loop, which preventing:
    mpv_render_context_render(mpv_gl, render_params);

    from being called.
This can be "remedied" by making a new wlr surface with:
surface = zwlr_layer_shell_v1_get_layer_surface(shell, wl_surface, output->output, layer, "mpvpaper");

at the cost of not displaying any video as well.

This all leads me to believe that this is wlr's or wayland's fault for destroying the surface after a monitor restart.

However I can't prove this, as I don't know how to see if the surface has been destroyed.

Possible Solutions

I think by restoring the wlr surface without restarting mpv or even the entire program is the solution.
But every attempt I tried doing this has failed.

So I would like some feedback on my findings, proposed solution and how to carry it out. Thanks for reading.

Update

Realizing that glpaper's boilerplate code is a lost cause.
I'm refactoring mpvpaper to be loosely based on swaybg's implementation.
The initial results are promising, but a lot more work needs to be done.

Howto start with sway?

I want to start mpvpaper to set animated wallpaper with sway, howto?

I tried to have mpvpaper command in various file of z-shell: .zlogin, .zprofile, .zshrc but mpvpaper won't start and only default gray sway's wallpaper.

I don't have swaybg starts with sway.

Dropping all frames (again)

I have the exact same problem as #29.

I use Hyprland with NVIDIA proprietary drivers and mpvpaper is dropping all frames:

It worked fine with nouveau.

mpv is able to play the video.

I think it may be due to the fact that mpv uses vo=gpu and mpvpaper uses vo=libmpv?

How can I get full debug output from mpv?

Dropping all frames

Same thing happens if i use a different wallpaper, with a different resolution.

Currently using hyprland.

OpenGL error

Hey fam, really appreciate your work.

I'm recieving an OpenGL error when trying to mpvpaper. Any suggestions?

[libmpv_render] after creating texture: OpenGL error INVALID_OPERATION.

I'm on Nvidia rtx3070 if it's relevant.

Thx!

Mpvpaper not working

I installed the mpvpaper package from AUR and after running this command -
mpvpaper -p -f -o -loop HDMI-A-1 O1CBmbpGGVIyJAZ_4k\ konosuba\ megumin\ 60fps\ live\ wallpaper.mp4
It does nothing. I cannot see the video (nor hear the sound) being played.

sax.mp4

EDIT : I tried to install the ffnvcodec-headers packages as mentioned in the aur comments but it didn't work.

Feature request: Output of a window as the input to mpvpaper (e.g. YouTube pop out player)

First of, I am a noob when it comes to compositors / wayland protocols, so I am not sure if this is even possible.

I wonder if it would be possible to take the "video output" (i.e. the window if it were fullscreen) and "pipe" it to mpvpaper or similar.

My use case is I play YouTube in a pop out window, it would be kinda cool if I could make one of those my desktop background.

example. of the pop out player:
image

Chaining commandline arguments for multiple monitor

Currently if I want to set different videos for each monitor, I'll have to run multiple mpvpaper commands.

What I want is something like this (basically only 1 mpvpaper command to spawn all the mpv ones):

mpvpaper DP-1 "path/to/video1" DP-2 "path/to/video2"

The obvious benefit here is that I can manage mpvpaper as a user service for more fine-grained control (restart, stop, ...). For context, wlr-rand and swaybg have this design.

gladLoadGLLoader((GLADloadproc) eglGetProcAddress) should be called directly instead of using gladLoadGL(). gladLoadGL() internally uses the GLX loader which while not requiring an X server it does require that you have libGL installed even though in a pure wayland environment libEGL should be the only requirement for GL loading.

How can I create a playlist?

I have a pl_wallpaper.txt which contains the path to my wallpapers. And I want to run like this:
mpvpaper "*" -o "--profile=wallpaper --playlist=.config/mpv/pl_wallpaper.txt"
But i get [-] Not enough args passed

Is it possible to create a playlist from a txt or somewhere?

Graphical Glitches when playing videos

Regularly any video that playing experiences random graphical glitches some a lot worse than others. Here is an example of an average glitch. This happens randomly and has no specific cause as far as my experience with it could tell.

What it looks like:
glitch
What it should look like:
normal

My mpvpaper args consist of only --no-audio and --loop. I have an extensive mpv.conf that uses vo=gpu hwdec=vaapi and high quality settings and never experience this issue with mpv. I am on gentoo musl and this issue is the same regardless of window manager I use. I am using the latest version of mpvpaper from git. However mpv is on version 0.35.0

When I run mpvpaper this is the output it gives:

[!] mpvpaper does not support any other vo than "libmpv"
 (+) Video --vid=1 (*) (h264 1920x1080 30.000fps)
     Audio --aid=1 --alang=eng (*) (ac3 2ch 48000Hz)
     Audio --aid=2 --alang=eng (ac3 2ch 48000Hz)
Using hardware decoding (vaapi).
VO: [libmpv] 1920x1080 vaapi[nv12]
V: 00:00:19 / 00:00:30 (65%)

Playlist timer

Hi,

I know it is possible for mpvpaper to play videos in a directory.
But would it be possible for it to change videos for example every hour? not just when he finishes reading one.

Cannot play videos in a directory

(+) Video --vid=1 (*) (h264 1920x1080 30.000fps)
only one video is loaded when I run mpvpaper -o "no-audio --loop-playlist shuffle" DP-2 ~/Videos/Wallpapers/*

Feature request: rendering on all outputs at the same time

In the proposed feature, a command like

mpvpaper '*' video.mkv

would display the same video on all outputs at once; when a new output is added while the program is running, the wallpaper would extend to display the video there as well.

(There are no doubt ways to approximate this behavior using ffmpeg and a control script which adds new instances of mpvpaper when a new output appears, but having this feature in mpvpaper itself would be very convenient and likely be much more efficient.)

crash

mpvpaper works for about 30 seconds before crashing with the following error:

libmpv.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I updated my system recently and tried to use mpvpaper, but this come out
mpvpaper: error while loading shared libraries: libmpv.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I think it is a issue with the new version of mpv on arch because I downgraded from 1:0.35.0-2 to 1:0.34.1-5 and it works as normal

feature req: slideshow over all video files in a directory

maybe there is an easy way to do this that I'm overlooking, but what I'd really like is to point it at a directory full of videos, and have it randomly select one to play, switching based on the setting of --slideshow. is there a way to do this right now?

Feature Req: Opacity option

I know this might seem kinda odd, but it would be cool if we could specify an opacity for mpvpaper to run at, i'm not sure how difficult this would be to implement, but it would be cool. Hopefully it would just work as an option like --opacity and then the value with 1 being opaque and 0 invisible i guess. I tried looking through to see if i could add this myself, but it seems far to complicated for me :(.

Second instance does not obey 'loop' mpv option

When running two instances of mpvpaper (eg for a dual monitor setup), the second instance does not loop and quits after the video is done.
Can either be done when specifying mpvpaper twice in sway config, or running two mpvpaper instances at the same time in the same shell.
Exact command (for my setup) exec mpvpaper -o "no-audio loop --hwdec=vaapi" eDP-1 "Outerwall.m4v" & exec mpvpaper -o "no-audio loop --hwdec=vaapi" HDMI-A-1 "Outerwall.m4v"

Feature Request : Shuffle input videos from a directory

is there any existing method to shuffle the playlist so that random videos will be played? if not, please suggest or add a feature to shuffle the input so that same video file won't be played everytime in the exact same order.

Random crashes in ca. 1min to 1h on Intel laptop with igpu driver (Iris) calling abort() / SIGABRT

Hey, first of all thanks for the recent patches.

I was hoping it will solve some random crashes of mpvpaper I had in the past half year, but sadly things didn't change for me.

cpu/gpu: Intel i5-1035G4 (10th gen mobile)
display: external HDMI monitor to laptop
system: Arch Linux
wm: Sway

mpvpaper: reproduced both on 1.2.1 and current master branch
mesa: reproduced both on 22.1.7-1 and current main branch
kernel: reproduced both on 5.19.7.arch1-1 and current drm-tip

In the coredump all the crashes all traced as abort() < iris_dri.so < libEGL_mesa.so < render() at ../src/main.c:142 :

I attach the coredump and the gdb debugging session with (gdb) thread apply all bt full

I would like to ask your opinion as if this is likely a mpvpaper issue or likely a Mesa issue?
If the later, then do you think I should I go ahead and report it on Mesa issues as an Intel igpu driver (Iris) bug?
(potentially pointing Mesa devs to mpvpaper to reproduce it?)

use all outputs except one

I have my ipad connected as an external display via wifi/vnc.
When mpvpaper is running the vnc connection is really slow.

Is there a possibility to specify a range of outputs so i can exclude my ipad?
Maybe just an option to exclude all headless outputs?

Add a (pre-release) tag

It might be a good idea to create a (pre-release) tag. That way package maintainers can create stable (or semi-stable) packages.

mpvpaper hanging on startup

The moment I try to run anything other than mpvpaper --help it just hangs with no output at all. It is doing some form of computation, as it is using 100% of one of my cores. Even if I try verbosely running it with mpvpaper -pv '*' [small gif] there is no output and 100% usage on a core. This happens when using mpvpaper from the Arch repos, mpvpaper-git from the AUR, and manually building from this repo. Is there any kind of log or output I can upload here for better debugging?

Blurred background when using fractional scaling.

If you use a scaling between 1-2 in the sway's settings, the background will become blurred.

How to Reproduce:

Set scale 1.5 in sway's monitor settings.
Then

mpvpaper xxx

The background will not be blurred if the scale 1 setting is used.

--auto-pause doesn't take effect?

I use sway and use tabbed window mode, I had:

exec mpvpaper --auto-pause -o "no-audio --loop-playlist shuffle" DP-2 /path/to/mp4/video

when I have window in fullscreen mode, I still observe high cpu usage of mpvpaper, so I guess it's not paused, how to check if it's paused and how to make pause work.

As I only want when I can't see wallpaper as other windows took all screen spaces, it's paused/stopped and unpaused/unstopped when there's spaces showing wallpaper. (I don't understand when "Automagically pause mpv when the wallpaper is hidden")

segfault when trying to run on a HDMI monitor

Hi, thanks a lot for this, it is really amazing.

I'm using it on my setup to have nice background on my login screen (w/ greetd/wlgreet).

It works flawlessly on eDP-1 for my laptop, but when I have another screen connected (i.e. HDMI-A-1) I get the following output:

zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) mpvpaper -s -v -o 'no-audio loop-playlist=inf' "HDMI-A-1"

Doesn't really matter which flags I pass or which mp4 file I use, I always get this result.

Let me know how I can provide more info for debugging this.

Thanks in advance.

kde wayland, working but isn't acutally the wallpaper

mpvpaper -o "no-audio" '*' XCDEMainMenuScreen1080p20Mbps2.mp4

So I want to have a animated wallpaper, but maybe the layer isnt correct? The command works, but for example when I click the desktop button in the bottom right. It shows my background and the video background doesn't come back until i click on another app.

also if you could help me adding infinite looping to my video.
