Jack, I did not see your contribution here until just now, a full 15 months later! Thank you very much for your comment. You have done some amazing work finding and fixing some bugs for us because of your extraordinary skill with the GNU Debugger. We are indebted to you.

I am happy to report that this bug no longer affects ViewTouch running under Debian 9 Testing but it still exists in Debian 9 Stable. I don't know which code update in which package fixes this bug; there are so many thousands of packages in Debian, and in any Linux Distribution. I will close this issue when Debian Stable no longer has this bug.
