Creative Commons Licenses for GitHub Projects

French German Italian Polish Spanish Portuguese Turkish

In this repo you can find easy ways for applying Creative Commons Licenses on Github repositories through Markdown language.

WARNING: You shouldn't use Creative Commons licenses for software. Use Free Software Licenses for that kind of repositories, like GPL, BSD, etc. Creative Commons Licenses are meant for intellectual works only.

The easiest way for finding the right CC License for your project is the Creative Commons website.

Here we present six types of CC Licenses:

More information about licenses, and plain-text formatted licenses texts can be found on https://choosealicense.com/.

cc-licenses's Issues

`LICENSE-CC-BY-NC-SA` does not parse correctly

It's entirely possible this is a GitHub limitation. I have yet to find a plaintext version of CC-BY-NC-SA that GitHub understands, but it would be great if we could find one and correct this repo:

Add translations for CC-BY-NC-SA

After #10 is merged, we would need to add the translated versions of the CC-BY-NC-SA license to Spanish and German.

TODO:

  • Add Spanish translation of CC BY-NC-SA
  • Add German translation of CC BY-NC-SA

Add Italian translation

After @Magicianred comment on #12 would be great to have an Italian translation of the README.md and for the license texts.

The changes that would be needed are:

  • Add a new it folder containing a README.md file which should be a translation from the English README.md.
  • Add the Italian version of the license texts.
  • Add a badge on the main README.md pointing to the Italian translation folder.
  • Add a badge on it/README.md pointing to the main README.md (see the other translations).

You don't need to translate the licenses texts, they can be downloaded from Creative Commons website. The last time I checked, only the English version of the license texts could be downloaded as a .txt file, so we used to have to reformat the HTML files as .txt files. After creativecommons/cc-legal-tools-app#56 has been merged, we should be able to download the txt files from CC, but I don't know if that code has been deployed yet. I'll ask and comment here if I hear some news.

Add Spanish translation

After #2 opened by @cyb3rko, I think would be nice to add a Spanish translation of the CC Licenses and the README.md.
We can wait until #2 is merged, but my idea so far is having one directory for each translation. Like:

de
 ├── LICENSE-CC-BY
 ├── LICENSE-CC-BY-SA
 └── README.md
es
 ├── LICENSE-CC-BY
 ├── LICENSE-CC-BY-SA
 └── README.md
LICENSE-CC-BY
LICENSE-CC-BY-SA
README.md

We should check if GitHub automatically recognizes the license out of a translated LICENSE file. If not, we should add a note encouraging people to add both the English and the translated version of the license text.

[Sleeping] Remove license files from the repository

Creative Commons make available all license texts on their GitHub repository: https://github.com/creativecommons/creativecommons.org

All translations are available in HTML files, while the English version of the license text is also available in plan text.
We should consider not hosting our own license texts and pointing to their files instead.
Until creativecommons/cc-legal-tools-app#8 is fixed, we could start removing only the English version while keeping the translations.

Possibility of adding KiCad footpronts/logotypes to this Git

I'm not sure if this is wanted or the right place for it but I'd thought I'd ask. It doesn't really seem to fit into any other place, and it might help someone. If nothing else it should drive more traffic your way perhaps.

I have been using the resources here to add license information to my own OpenHardware projects published on GitHub simply because it is convenient once I know what license I want, vs having to muddle through the 'chooser' on CC's webpage. One of the things I created for myself was the KiCad libraries to add the logo for the license on the PCB itself. Ie, basically taking the images provided and scaling/cleaning them up to make a reasonable logo to add to the silkscreen.

With minimal cleanup, I'd say they could be added to this Git, usable for any other OpenHardware enthusiast in their projects. And as part of a package, IMHO it would fit here.

Let me know if you feel it appropriate, and I'll make a pull request.
