I have a Moto Droid with CyanogenMod on it and Wired-Tether working
successfully. I have a static IP assigned to the phone through Verizon
business and have the ability to access the phone via ssh or what ever
because of this feature(unlike a normal phone). Problem is I can't get the
ports forwarded from the ppp0 interface to the usb0 interface and through
to the computer.

I've tried pushing the iptables binary and using it but the when trying to
set up forwarding rules I get a FIX ME! error (I assume there's a missing
kernel mod). I also tried bridging ppp0 and usb0 but the current kernel
doesn't seem to support this feature.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this working? Is there a utility
included with BusyBox that can get this done?

When I first start wired-tether, I get an error about an unsupported kernel.  
According to the FAQ, I need the following config options on the android kernel 
CONFIG_NETFILTER/CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES and/or RNDIS.  I have verified that all 
of those config options exist, however my Linux box doesn't see any RNDIS host 
when wired-tether is started.  If I switch the phone into native tethering 
mode, my Linux box DOES see an RNDIS connection.

I looked at the source code, and noticed several checks:
/proc/net/netfilter - This does exist on my phone
/sys/devices/virtual/net/usb0/enable - The usb0 exists, but no the 'enable'
/sys/devices/virtual/usb_composite/rndis/enable - The 'rndis' directory does 
not exist

Please note that this DID work just fine with the original 2.1 firmware that 
came with the phone.  Just not with the latest 2.2 OTA update that just came 
out.

This patch adds a netfilter rule to allow tethering with ISPs that don't 
support fragmented packets, but do advertise an appropraite path MTU.

Background: some ISPs don't support IP fragmentation, either because they're 
afraid of IP fragmentation attacks, or their routers are braindead.  Usually 
this isn't an issue for connecting clients because their DHCP responses include 
an interface MTU equal to the path MTU.  In response, the client ensures during 
TCP handshakes that connections use an MSS that results in TCP/IP packets never 
being fragmented.

However, problems occur when the connecting "client" is a NAT router (such as a 
tethering phone).  Often the phone-tethered host interface (e.g., USB RNDIS, 
802.11, etc.) uses a preset MTU (usually 1500) that exceeds the path MTU 
advertised by the ISP.  The host will open TCP connections with too-large of an 
MSS, and inevitably large packets will become fragmented and lost.  The fix is 
to have the router (phone) mangle TCP handshakes to clamp the MSS such that 
generated TCP/IP packets never exceed the path MTU.  This patch implements such 
a fix as described in the iptables(8) man page.

Now, I've not-yet witnessed this problem in practice when tethering--either 
because my ISP does support fragmentation, or because the path MTU (1400 or 
1492) isn't low enough to cause fragmentation in practice.  That said, I have 
encoutered this problem with wired-broadband ISPs.  Since the fix is trivial, 
it's probably a good idea to implement as I'm sure someone, somewhere, gets 
this wrong.

Also, I found that the "iptables" binary included with v1.4 doesn't support the 
"--clamp-mss-to-pmtu" option to the TCPMSS target.  I'm not actually sure where 
this executable comes from as there's no source included nor a pointer to it 
(which, I suspect is an unintentional compliance issue with the GPLv2, which 
iptables is released under--this should probably be addressed as well).  I 
assume it's a stock AOSP build, from Donut maybe?

In any event, it works with the updated iptables version that came with my 
phone, which I think is just a stock build from Eclair AOSP.  So in addition to 
the patch, the "iptables" binary would have to be updated as well.

This is more of a suggestion on how to get wired tether working on these 
phones. Motorola has replace RNDIS with their own usbnet on these phones. 

The usbnet can be enabled on a rooted phones by using the following command

#echo 1 > /sys/class/usb_composite/usbnet/enable

Currently the usbnet works only on windows machines. Like the RNDIS it creates 
a virtual Ethernet interface on the windows machine. The phone has a 
192.168.16.1 ip on usb0 and the pc get a 192.168.16.x ip address. 

It should be an easy task for the wired tether developers to add support for 
these devices.

HTC Droid Incredible Windows 7 x64 won't tether or connect fails to install 
driver

I'm using the latest version of android-wired-tether on my Evo 4G.  I finally 
have it all working, and my question is why can't these commands be included as 
part of the program?  

To get my phone prepped to tether, I installed GScript Lite so that I can 
create a button to enter these commands. You need root so you can run these 
commands as SU.  You don't need to worry about USB Debugging settings at all, 
this works either way.  This is the script you need to run before starting 
Wired Tether:

echo 4 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch

That script turns will turn on the fourth switch in usb_function_switch and 
disable the other.  The switches will look like this:

usb_mass_storage:disable
adb:disable
diag:disable
serial:disable
ether:enable
modem:disable
nmea:disable

You want to verify the switches settings, you can create a new script with this 
command in it:
cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch

This command to turn on ethernet won't start tethering immediately all by 
itself. It only will allow Wired Tether to do its job.  You can open it up, 
press "Press to start tethering" and it will enable tethering, show PC 
information in the notification bar, and monitor the data transferred.  It will 
even turn off tethering when you press stop.  When you turn it off it creates 
another problem: usb_mass_storage and adb stay disabled.  That means even if 
you hit Disk Drive in the notification bar, your SD card won't mount over USB.  

To fix usb_mass_storage, you can enter this command:

echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch

That will get your switches back to this:
usb_mass_storage:enable
adb:disable
diag:disable
serial:disable
ether:disable
modem:disable
nmea:disable

I thought I could also turn ADB (USB Debugging) back on by sending "echo 2" to 
toggle the second switch.  When I do that, adb is enabled, but usb_mass_storage 
is disabled.  The workaround is to go into Settings > Applications > 
Development and then uncheck and recheck USB Debugging.  

Voila, USB Tethering with a beautiful interface that works on the HTC Evo 4G.  

Lastly, if this is old news I'm sorry.  I've seen other people mention 
disabling usb_mass_storage and adb before, but I never saw any mention of how 
to do so.  I'm new to Android, so it was a mystery for me.  I figured it out 
based on a common USB tethering command (/system/bin/netsharing net on && echo 
4 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch). I figure there must 
be other people out there who also don't know these commands, so this post is 
for them.

I worked with one of the developers to get this sort of working, see issue 24. 
However I am now so frustrated off this app that I removed it from my phone, 
and won't look into this again until somebody have time to do some serious 
troubleshooting/work perhaps even rewriting the whole thing as on a HTC Evo 4G, 
Froyo 2.2, at least on my rooted phone is 100% unreliable!

What I mean is that it works fine anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours, 
sometimes even over night attached to my HTPC. But mostly on both my HTPC and 
laptop, both running Windows XP sp3, it only works for about 30-60 minutes, 
then I see network traffic has halted to nothing, my phone display usually 
turns on by itself and stays on by the way, USB debugging on phone is still 
listed, however USB connectivity (Charge only) is gone and can't be 
restarted/changed, Local Area Connection on computer has stopped responding, 
and many times USB ports on computer has also stopped working, meaning if I 
insert a memory stick/USB flash drive whatever you call it, it won't work. This 
whole mess of causes current download(s) to be aborted, and if it can't be 
resumed at a later point (mostly), I of course have to start all over, after I 
have rebooted computer, and computer won't shut down/reboot gracefully, as the 
Local Area Connection has stopped responding, so I have to press reset button 
or hold down power button until it shuts down. Note that sometimes, when I am 
lucky I guess, I can don't lose USB Charge only on phone, and can just unplug 
USB cab;e and restart app and it will work for another 5 min to several hours, 
but mostly minutes not hours.

I have experienced the above EVERY DAY since I worked with one of the 
developers, who kindly took time to troubleshoot with me back in the middle of 
August, so for almost two months, every day I have had to reboot the computer I 
used it on, every 30-60 minutes. I have now come to the point where I have 
removed this app from my phone, and will instead use the android wireless 
tether which is 100% reliable, although a bit slower.

I hope the developers will eventually gets this serious issue fixed, but for 
now it is simply to much of a hassle to deal with.

This patch adds support for Samsung Galaxy S devices running Froyo or later.  
It's been tested on a Samsung Epic 4G specifically, although based on their 
respective kernel sources it should work on the at least the I9000, Captivate, 
and Vibrant as well.

While Froyo does natively support USB tethering, many folks are unsatisfied

I am running Senseable 3.1, and have Wireless tether installed already.  
Added Wired to be able to connect without needed to eat up my laptop 
battery with wifi also.  I do see the HTC android Phone USB device, as well

android-wifi-tether v2.0.5pre9 work great on 3G and 4G.  (FYI in Fresh 3.2 and 
3.3.0.1 i had to uninstall android-wifi-tether and then reinstall for it to

Tethering starts with no error messages, but the OS (Ubuntu 10.10 x64) doesn't 
appear to recognize the phone. It doesn't even appear to show up in lsusb. When 
I click Menu... Log, I see the following error:
"Configuring network interface... failed"

Everything else in the log succeeds. I replaced the stock "ip" with a symlink 
to busybox, which didn't fix the problem. I'm running out of ideas here.

I'm using arch linux, and I've also tried using xubuntu with the same 
result.  I believe the rndis module is loaded.  I've added "rndis_host" to 
my modules list in rc.conf.  I've also done modprobe rndis_host and then 
plugged the phone in.  Still no usb0 interface.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

it runs but no option to connect ever comes up on the computer

newest wired tether app, ive tried it on lucid lynx, mac 10.4, and snow leopard

using the stock kernel patched for OC, im mostly curious on how the  kernel 
needs to be patched, none of the instructions are clear on that.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install either 1.2 android-wired-tether.
2. Connect USB cable, open android-wired-tether, start tether.
3. Allow computer to detect USB connection, install driver (NDIS)
automatically on Win7, establish connection.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect the program to connect, and remain connected.  Instead, the phone
reboots without any warning as soon as the computer receives a DHCP IP address.

Version 1.2 both reboot the Nexus One.

I have been trying to get this to work for the past three hours on my
droid. I've rooted, flash files, sbrecovery, installed bugless beast and
when i launch the wired-tether it still tells me that "the kernel I am
running doesn't have all the necessary" things to make it run.


Please help!!

This should work on Lg devices using usb_gadget. Ex.(Optimus M,T,One) I 
verified using echo to enable rndis and ran app version 1.4.1 and it connected 
and worked as expected. I tried to compile full apk using changes attached and 
got errors on the ndk part. Is there something special I have to do to compile 
as I had no issues building wireless-tether in either the ndk or sdk part. It 
indicated missing jni and I moved libnativetask to jni folder and then I got 
some errors on cutils include.
