eff's Issues

Compatibility with GHC 9.6

Currently the version of prompt# and control0# used in eff do not receive PromptTag#s, and so doesn't compile with GHC 9.6. Is it possible to reuse one global prompt tag through the whole program? Something like:

data PromptTag a = PromptTag { getPromptTag# :: PromptTag# a }

thePromptTag :: PromptTag Any
thePromptTag = unsafePerformIO $ IO $
  \s -> case newPromptTag# s of
    (# s, tag #) -> (# s, PromptTag tag #)
{-# NOINLINE thePromptTag #-}

Benchmarks

Hey,

I see you made eff compile with GHC 9.6 on a branch, so I re-enabled eff benchmarks in effectful here.

You can see how it currently fares against other libraries by running cabal run bench -- -p countdown.1000 and cabal run bench -- -p filesize.1000.

How does `eff` implement delimited control?

I am reading eff's source code and I saw that in the control operation, it throws a captured frame up to the handler to deal with, instead of resuming it in place. To me (who probably does not have enough context), this seems like extra indirection. What is the motivation for this design?

Status Update?

I was wondering what the status was on Eff since the delimited continuation primops have been merged.
