README.md's introduction seems dubious at best

I take issue with the viewpoint that IRC requires us to extend trust to certificate authorities as with HTTPS. Doing so basically solves nothing, as we have seen with CA's like Diginotar.

I propose that README.md should be rewritten to emphasize the need for SSH-like fingerprint verification and caching the certificate if the user has accepted the certificate. This is considerably more reasonable than pushing for the X.509-style CA trust model.

Or, put more bluntly, would you trust Verisign with the ability to sign, for example, irc.blackhatacademy.org? I don't think you would... at least, I wouldn't if I were you.

Beyond that, this is nothing new... we have discussed the problems with self-signed certificates for over a decade in the context of SSL-enabling IRC. Please be sure that it is not portrayed as any sort of new issue.
