that's because gazebo forked server into a child process, so gdb won't work off the bat. You'll have to find the pid of the child process and attach gdb to it.

That said, the new dev just got the update to fork both gui and server, so there'll be 3 process.

Lastly, I just tried spawning the cordless drill off my dev branch build, and it worked fine, might be some of the model database stuff in the pipeline not quite in the deb you have yet?
