This is a preference pane for Mac OS X 10.7+ that enables hardware media keys (prev, play, next) to be routed to 3rd-party sandboxed applications in a nice way, without unwanted side effects. This has been specifically created with G-Ear, a native Google Music player for Mac in mind, but any suggestion or patch is welcome!

magickeys's Issues

Not working with Gear 2.0

Since I've update Gear to version 2.0, MagicKeys seems to be ignored. It's running, but keys don't work as usually.

Bluetooth headphone controls not working?

Hi, wasn't sure if the new headphone controls commit applied to bluetooth headsets as well. At any rate I tried the latest version (1.4) and pressing the play/pause button on my bluetooth headset still starts iTunes.

Apple Remote

I am trying to use this so that the play/pause, next & previous buttons on the Apple Remote control 3rd party apps (such as Google Chrome, Radiant plater, Spotify).

The preferences pane appears to say that this is possible, but nothing works.

Also, the option to start an app by pressing a button doesn't work either.

Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

This is on Yosemite 10.10.3.

Problems with High Sierra?

it happens often since I upgraded to High Sierra that the keys don't perform any action, I have to restart the agent and the player app to make them work.

Are you ware of this problem?

Three finger tap of mousepad breaks after install of Magic Keys

Once I installed MagicKeys on my Late 2008 Macbook core2 duo 2.4 4G's of Ram running Mavericks, it immediately disables my ability to use the three finger tap on the mouse pad for looking up dictionary entries.as soon as I uncheck all of the options on Magickeys, it will work again.

Add a screenshot of the preference pane to the readme

This is kind of a silly issue, but it'd be nice to add a screenshot of the preference pane to the readme that is shown here on GitHub.

Also, it would be nice if you clarified if the preference pane lets you route the media keys to any program or just to G-Ear, and whether it is possible to use the play button to open a program other than iTunes.

Finally, does this uninstall cleanly by just deleting the preference pane? Does it have any performance impact (i.e. does it have any process constantly running to capture the keyboard events)?

Give execution instructions in README

I (and the community) would you please give us full instructions on how to use the tool? From git clone to the actual compiler commands in xCode.

Publish to AppStore

Hi, good job!
I can't find this app at AppStore. But when I download it from website, at every startup I need allow application to run.
If it's free for all, can I send it to AppStore?
You can contact with me by email net-files at yandex dot ru

App will launch if FF/RW keys are pressed

If the chosen 3rd party app is not running, any media key will launch that app, not just the Play/Pause key (ie. the default system behavior w/ iTunes).

This is annoying if you're using this to avoid iTunes from auto-launching on Play/Pause key press.

MagicKeys preference pane says that update is available

I'm using v1.4.1 according to the preference pane, and it says a new version is available, and directs me to the website, but the version I just downloaded from the website (again) is also v1.4.1, and after installing it, the preference pane still tells me that an update is available.

App Doesn't Work

I setup the app on MacBook Pro 2016 v10.14.5

When I press Media Keys it still launches iTunes, same thing with my headphone play button
