humane-dates's Introduction

Humane-Dates

A better way to display relative dates using JavaScript. Instead of a raw date string, this script will return strings like "2 hours ago" or "5 days".

Usage

humaneDate(new Date);
humaneDate('2008-01-28T20:24:17Z');

jQuery Plugin

<span title="2008-01-28T20:24:17Z">January 1, 2008 20:24:17 GMT</span>

$('span').humaneDates();

<time datetime="2008-01-28T20:24:17Z">January 1, 2008 20:24:17 GMT</time>

$('time').humaneDates();

Tests

To run the full test suite:

cd test
./test.sh

humane-dates's Issues

Trailing commas

Hi Zach,

Just found this script; it looks great. (Also just found your blog for the first time, which I'm really enjoying.) Just wanted to bring to your attention an error thrown by the Google Closure Compiler while I was trying to compile this together with some other scripts of mine:

ERROR - Parse error. Internet Explorer has a non-standard intepretation of trailing commas. Arrays will have the wrong length and objects will not parse at all.

This is from the end of the "formats" array. I generally remove trailing commas like this in my own code for the reason Closure Compiler cites. Don't know, of course, if you have a reason for leaving it in, but if not I thought you might like to know.

Thanks again for all the neat code you're putting out there.

twitter JSON date (created_at) passed as a string doesn't recognize time zone

If you take some JSON from twitter and pass the created_at property as a string to humaneDate, it will fail to adjust to your time zone.

However, if you pass it a date object it will work.

E.g.,

created_at: "Fri Jan 27 18:40:26 +0000 2012"

Fails: humaneDate("Fri Jan 27 18:40:26 +0000 2012") -> 6 Hours Ago

Pass: humaneDate(new Date("Fri Jan 27 18:40:26 +0000 2012") -> 1 Minute Ago

Internationalization support

I'm trying to configure the lang variable to print date in another language... and it seems to not be possible at all...

[enhancement] Add missing bower.json.

Hey, maintainer(s) of zachleat/Humane-Dates!

We at VersionEye are working hard to keep up the quality of the bower's registry.

We just finished our initial analysis of the quality of the Bower.io registry:

7530 - registered packages, 224 of them doesnt exists anymore;

We analysed 7306 existing packages and 1070 of them don't have bower.json on the master branch ( that's where a Bower client pulls a data ).

Sadly, your library zachleat/Humane-Dates is one of them.

Can you spare 15 minutes to help us to make Bower better?

Just add a new file bower.json and change attributes.

{
  "name": "zachleat/Humane-Dates",
  "version": "1.0.0",
  "main": "path/to/main.css",
  "description": "please add it",
  "license": "Eclipse",
  "ignore": [
    ".jshintrc",
    "**/*.txt"
  ],
  "dependencies": {
    "<dependency_name>": "<semantic_version>",
    "<dependency_name>": "<Local_folder>",
    "<dependency_name>": "<package>"
  },
  "devDependencies": {
    "<test-framework-name>": "<version>"
  }
}

Read more about bower.json on the official spefication and nodejs semver library has great examples of proper versioning.

NB! Please validate your bower.json with jsonlint before commiting your updates.

Thank you!
