The repo for evaluating the custom query for supporting logrus

Background

So far out of the box query has not supported the 3rd party package logrus (https://github.com/sirupsen/logrus) with GO lang. Whenever you use SetFormatter with DisableHTMLEscape:false, it still alerts as “Log entries created from user input” CWE-117.

Root cause

The query -go/log-injection.ql only supports default log framework. So even if you sanitized with "DisableHTMLEscape : false", it would detect the alert.

Workaround

I generated the custom query based on the original go/log-injection. The query is custom-queries/go/Custom_LogInjection.ql

For applying the custom query

  • The following files are needed.
    • custom-queries/go/qlpack.yml
    • custom-queries/code-scanning.qls
    • .github/codeql/codeql-config.yml
  • you need modify .github/workflows/codeql.yml

CLI

  1. download from https://github.com/github/codeql-cli-binaries/releases
  2. The install folder is $CODEQL_HOME
  3. copy custom-queries to go-custom
  4. copy .codeql in $CODEQL_HOME/qlpacks/codeql/go-examples/0.0.0/.codeql to go-custom/0.0.0
  5. the current directory would be go-custom
  6. codeql resolve queries custom-queries
  7. codeql resolve qlpacks
  8. move to your repository directory
  9. codeql database create ../codeql-db/go-samples --language="go" --overwrite
  10. codeql database analyze ../codeql-db/go-samples --format=sarif-latest --output=result.sarif $CODEQL_HOME/qlpacks/codeql/go-custom/0.0.0/custom.qls

*NOTE:1-8 you operate Only once. 9, 10 whenever you scan your code base.

About the sample code

  • This sample is a simple web server. When you specify the URL http://localhost:8090/hello on your browser, you can see "hello" on the browser.
  • Also you can see some log message on your console

How to build and run

  1. go run sandbox
  2. http://localhost:8090/hello on a browser
  • In advance you might need the commands "go mod".
