This can be done by adding the following line to the keys section in config.h:

{ false, XK_y, it_shell_cmd, (arg_t) "echo -n $SXIV_IMG | xsel -i" }

This needs xsel to be installed on your system. You could also use xclip as an alternative.

I guess this mapping won't make it into the standard repos because of the additional dependancy!?

tl;dr: you're correct!

I for myself never considered the it_shell_cmd mappings in the key section to be dependencies. They are listed there as useful examples. But since almost all packagers consider them to be dependencies, I will not include new commands into config.def.h.
