x13prebuilt's Issues

Update to Build 26

Have built a new binary version for OS-X here.

Was thinking if we shouldn't keep future versions in distinct locations (e.g., by putting it in a separate folder). A new version of x13binary would download it from the new location, so a specific version of x13binary would always use the same specific version of X-13.

Changes in Build 26 (by Census)

  • URL renamed to .../x13ashtmlsrc_V1.1_B26.tar.gz
  • makefile.g77 renamed to makefile.gf
  • resulting binary file x13ashtml renamed to x13asHTMLv11b26o1

Tasks

  • Binary OS-X
  • Binary Linux
  • Binary Windows
  • update x13binary
  • test if seasonal works with new binaries

The new v1.1.57/mac/x13ashtml.tar.gz is not compressed

I would suggets to either actually compress the file, or just renamed it to end in .tar to signal that it is uncompressed.

Also, shouldn't there be two binaries for M1 and i7 ?

Apple M1 ("Silicon") binary

As far as I understand it, the Fortran compiler situation is still in flux for the platform which should get settled either "soon" or "eventually" at which point we can look into a dedicated binary as a little bird tells that in @christophsax 's office such a precious chip is being present now ....

Clean up the top-level directory?

Before we hard-wired versions in (at 1.1.25, then 1.1.39, now 1.1.57) we dropped binaries at the top-level. They are from 1.1.19 and it is a little ... out of kilter.

They are six-years old. Nobody is going to use the build script with their path. Shall we just delete top-level directories linux, osx. windows? Or, if we want to keep the binaries, show them into v1.1.19?

Or does none of this matter as it is only important that we keep once published binaries?

Various TODOs

We are mostly there, but there are a few things that had come to mind:

  • top-level README.md
  • README.md for Linux detailing build
  • README.md for OS X detailing build, maybe describing install_name_tool use
  • README.md for Windows

Possible extensions:

  • Support for other Unix versions? Building on top of the Linux build may do. We probably need Solaris to really make CRAN happy, or else note that x13binary is only for Linux, Windows. OS X
  • Support for other OS X versions?

Edit 1 Marked items 3 and 4 as done.

Let go of 32bit Linux ?

This is being phased out by more and more distros too -- so let's just write it down here as well.

We certainly don't need to continue this "forever" as there will be fewer and fewer users -- but for as long as we have easy enough access to a build system we can of course keep it going.

Revisit pre-building versus on-demand building

We discussed Solaris as an open issue way back a few years ago in #2. It is still an open issue.

Given that the actual build of a binary is ... not that hard, should we just switch and maybe build a binary in some (or all?) cases?

I cannot recall us ever discussing that we cannot redistribute the Census-written Fortran files via CRAN. Am I forgetting or overlooking something?
