In most cases, you can follow the Comment Mail Pro Installation instructions the first time and then configure the Pro Plugin Updater (WordPress Dashboard Comment Mail Plugin Updater) to keep Comment Mail Pro updated. However, some web hosts block the Pro Plugin Updater from working correctly, resulting in a 404 error. If you cannot get your web host to work correctly with the Pro Plugin Updater, or if you have some other scenario that requires you to manually update Comment Mail, then you can follow the instructions below to manually upgrade Comment Mail Pro whenever an update is available.

Step-by-Step: Upgrading Comment Mail Pro Manually

  1. Log into Comment Mail.com to download the latest version of Comment Mail Pro.
    cm_login
  2. Visit your My Account page at Comment Mail.com, where you may now obtain the latest version of Comment Mail Pro. Please download the comment-mail-pro.zip file from this page.
    cm_zip
  3. Now before manually upgrading Comment Mail Pro, we should make sure that your existing Comment Mail options remain preserved. Visit (WordPress Dashboard Comment Mail Config. Options Data Safeguards) and make sure that "Safeguards on; i.e. protect my plugin options & comment subscriptions (recommended)" is selected. Click "Save All Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
    cm_safeguard
  4. Now we need to Deactivate and then Delete the old Comment Mail Pro plugin so that we can install the new version. As long as the Plugin Deletion Safeguards are enabled (see previous step), you will not lose any of your existing Comment Mail Options in this step.
  5. Once the old version has been deleted, you can upload and activate the latest version of Comment Mail Pro, which you downloaded earlier. Visit WordPress Dashboard Plugins Add New to upload and install the new version of Comment Mail Pro.
  6. Now upload and activate the comment-mail-pro.zip (or it might be named something like: comment-mail-pro-vXXXXXX.zip) file that you downloaded from Comment Mail.com. You can upload the ZIP file using your WordPress Dashboard; i.e. WordPress Dashboard Plugins Add New Upload Plugin.
  7. Once Comment Mail Pro has been activated, you can confirm that you now have the latest version by looking at the version number and comparing that to the latest release at the top of the changelog.

Daily Digest

The way it works is that a daily subscriber is sent email notifications no less than 24 hours apart. So it's OK for them to get an email as soon as a comment is posted, so long as they have not already been notified about any for the past 24 hours. If you then post another comment, it will be held and then delivered together with any others approx 24 hours later. [see https://github.com/wpsharks/comment-mail/issues/256#issuecomment-200298443)]

Getting Started

Are you ready to get started? Awesome! These articles will help you set up and configure Comment Mail on your site.

What is Comment Mail?

Comment Mail is a WordPress plugin that enables email subscriptions for comments. It allows commenters to sign up for email notifications whenever they leave a comment or subscribe to it without commenting.

How do I install it?

For installation instructions, please see Lite Installation and Pro Installation.

What if I have Subscribe to Comment Reloaded already installed?

If you are an existing Subscribe to Comments Reloaded user and you're switching to Comment Mail, please see the migration tutorial:

What basic configurations should I know to get started?

What plugins are compatible with Comment Mail?

Comment Mail is compatible with most WordPress plugins and themes. Plugins that provide a similar functionality (i.e., comment subscriptions) may introduce conflicts with Comment Mail, but otherwise you should have no problem running Comment Mail with other plugins.

Comment Mail is written with standard WordPress coding practices which ensures that it plays nicely with other plugins in the WordPress ecosystem.

Can existing users add new subscriptions without commenting?
