I did notice when running your instructions I ended up with different paths than you indicated, when I ran the sudo mv I ended up with a structure like:

/opt/maven/bin

So I had to put these lines in the in maven.sh

export MAVEN_HOME=/opt/maven 
export PATH=${MAVEN_HOME}/bin:${PATH}

I'm not sure if I made a mistake, but the sudo mv didn't seem to copy the directory to the target, but the only the contents

I noticed it is possible to put the version number into a variable to make this a little easier:

latest_maven=$(wget -qO- https://maven.apache.org/download.cgi | grep -Po "(?<=Apache Maven )[^ ]+(?= is the latest)")

Then you can

wget http://www-eu.apache.org/dist/maven/maven-3/$latest_maven/binaries/apache-maven-$latest_maven-bin.tar.gz
tar xvf apache-maven-$latest_maven-bin.tar.gz
sudo mv apache-maven-$latest_maven /opt/maven/

It does rely on finding some text to match on that will be stable, I'm sure my example can be improved...
