Setting the background color messes up all future instances of that letter

When I run this code the 'x' in the word "example" is all white rather than white text on black background.

    var terminal:AsciiPanel = new AsciiPanel();
    addChild(terminal);

    terminal.writeWithColor("x", 1, 1, 0xFFFFFFFF, 0xFFFF0000);
    terminal.writeString("example", 1, 3);
    terminal.paint();
}

I think this is because when painting it compares the colors to 0xFF000000 and not what the previous background color for that character was. I think a seperate array for the background and foreground color of each character would fix this.
