This story is an in-depth feature on two electricians — DuRay Jones and Michael Bell — who are suing UMD for racial discrimination. They filed their lawsuit in federal court last summer, but besides an initial story with the basic facts from the court documents, no one has really reported on what drove them to file or what the process has been like for them. The project is both a close look at their case and a narrative about how the stress of it has affected their home lives and mental health.

Update permalinks

"This is random lol but the permalink for the site is currently "umdracialdiscrimination" and we should probably change that (don't wanna have any libel in the url)" - Jillian Atelsek

Need to:

  1. Update repo name on Github and Heroku
  2. Update intro and installing sections in the README

Scroll aware navigation

The current navigation works fine, but would be better if aviewport method was added that updates the navigation links based on scroll position as well, and not just user interaction.

Method outline:

  1. Detect the most recent section to be 100px (or some other arbitrary number) from the top of the viewport
  2. Update the corresponding navigation link, and remove the active class from the other links

Production deployment

The Facilities Management project team would like the url for the site to be www.dbknews.com/umd-facilities-management-lawsuit if possible. I'm guessing we either link the Heroku site or deploy to AWS, but I'm not too sure how to do either of those things lol

Landing section (on mobile)

On mobile, the blurb gets pushed up past the top of the viewport. While the blurb is being moved to Ellipsis, we (I) need to check if we run into the same issue after the the blurb is removed.

Can't click landing links

Navigation container is on top of the landing container, thus preventing users from clicking on links in the landing section, and also makes it so that hovers don't register on anchor elements. A quick fix but it is nearly 1am and I am tired so for now I am just opening a ticket lol

Image Styling

"Could we make the top image just a little less opaque?" - Jillian Atelsek

May also be changing landing background image pending picture of the binder from the News Team

Navigation

"The hover function on the sidebar navigation seems to be a little wonky. The whole thing moves side to side when the labels appear, and it makes it difficult to select a circle. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the one-word hashtag to denote each section, but we can figure that out" -Jillian Atelsek

"Is there any way to make it that the filled in circle changes as you scroll through? So like, it matches the section you're on? Rn, if you click on a section but then scroll up or down, the circle doesn't change, and it could be confusing" -Jillian Atelsek
