I've added initial support over at https://github.com/wasamasa/mal/tree/elisp-readline for now. Running make test^elisp^step0 errors out immediately.

Stdin redirection: emacsrepl < input (fails right away)
Stdout redirection: emacsrepl > output (fails displaying what has been typed in)

This can be detected on the shell side with [[ -t 0]] for stdin and [[ -t 1]] for stdout, then saved to an environment variable to be exported for the elisp side to see. Downside of adding support for it is that the shell script can no longer use that pretty case form, it will instead have to add another check inside the case, or forego it completely.
