oneforone's Introduction

oneforone

Oneforone is a game to support diversity!

How it works

Name the person who is as qualified as you, but has a characteristic that's under-represented in your field. For example, if you're a man, you can name a woman. If you're white, you can name a person of color, if you're straight, name someone who is LGBTQ, if you're able-bodied, name someone who has a disability, etc.

Contributing

You can add yourself and your oneforone in names, maintained in an easy-to-read YAML file (".yml"). Content and feature suggestions are welcome via GitHub Issues. Code contributions are welcome via pull request.

Know someone who you admire, and want to know their oneforone? Tag them in an issue and we'll ask if they'll contribute!

Have an idea for a project that could use this data, like a "who to follow" recommendation tool based on the people you currently follow, or a browser plug-in that highlights names in articles/listicles/speaker line-ups that have listed their oneforone? Open an issue!

More about the project

Here's more about the nexus of the game, created by Deanna Zandt, Melissa Pierce and Andrew Rasiej.

This repo was created as an experiment during transparency camp, and for Ada Lovelace day -- October 14th -- we're asking folks to add their oneforone.

oneforone's Issues

Idea: Recommendation engine

I follow a huge number of people in tech -- I'd love to see who, based on their self-identified oneforone, I should also follow.

To that end -- I'd love to see a "who to follow" recommendation tool based on the people I currently follow and who their oneforone is.

Idea: Browser plug-in

I would love a browser plug-in that highlights names in articles/listicles/speaker line-ups that have listed their oneforone, and shows me who they are.

So, say a conference organizer is looking for experts on a certain topic and is looking at previous conference line-ups. Even if those conference line-ups were not diverse themselves, they'd be able to immediately discover the people who have been recommended as equally qualified but are under-represented in their field.

It's hard to think of an equal because everyone I think of is so much awesomer than me

So, impostor syndrome. I keep trying to think of someone and then I instantly start thinking about how much more awesome they are than me. I worry that this might be a barrier for other woman to contribute, too, so I'm trying to solve it this way: I'm listing some important qualifications about me. If you'd like to be my one for one, please comment. DON'T BE SHY.

  • I know digital strategy, some HTML/CSS, and I'm familiar with APIs and GitHub.
  • I'm good at strategic communications and digital gov strategy.
  • I organize some great tech events.
