hmm I rebuilt e2fsprogs with the -a libs removed and it compiles now.. both the so .0 have -U though..

This sounds correct, according to

$ pkg-config --libs ext2fs e2p

It is a libext2fs.so.2 responsibility to satisfy the libcom_err.so.2 dependency.
