no-js-hugo-theme's Introduction

No-JS Hugo Theme

A minimal, responsive, and privacy-friendly Hugo theme that does not require the client to enable JavaScript.

Many Hugo themes (and websites in general) don't render properly or even become unreadable when clients choose not to enable JavaScript. This theme is designed to work well if the client does not have JavaScript enabled. It is designed for both desktop and mobile browsers. All modern browsers (Chromium, Firefox, and Safari) are supported. The theme does not load any external third-party resources.

See the example site.

Screenshot

The theme works well with the Tor Browser at all security levels. Tor Browser does not support fallbacks for SVG images, so you may want to rasterize the theme's svg images as jpg/png/webp versions so that they display on the "safest" security level.

Some features are not possible without JavaScript. These features can be enabled in the site config file and will never decrease the quality of the website.

Additional JavaScript features:

  • light/dark theme switcher

no-js-hugo-theme's Issues

How to update website?

I have a website that uses this theme and have realised it has been updated. How should I go about updating my website? Do I just download + copy/paste into the themes folder, or is there other stuff I need to do?

For reference, my website is skivling.codeberg.page and the repo is at Codeberg.

Example config files

Dear developer, is it possible to have an exampleSite or some sort of config.toml example at README.md?

Add headers to tell LibreJS that the theme switcher.js is freely licensed

This is one of the only Hugo themes which do not require Javascript, and the only script it has is the theme switcher. Everything is MIT-licensed, so I request that the JS file be marked as freely licensed so it can be detected by LibreJS firefox add-on.
People using GNU IceCat or LibreJS web add-on block all javascript that is not verified to be freely licensed.
I think you can just add a special comment at the top, see Step 3 part 3.2.3/4 of: https://www.gnu.org/software/librejs/free-your-javascript.html
It may be worth reading the JavaScript Trap as well.

I was going to do this to my website, but it would be more beneficial if it was built into the theme.
