I think having karma or something similar as the happy-path default is good. If someone has arguments against this feel free to leave a comment.

I could see an argument either way. Not totally sold on karma and damn it is a huge dep but think it's important to pick something and make happy-path experience awesome. I'm going to experiment with karma a bit more and see what it can do, hoping the benefits will outweigh the file size.
Also I will give some thought to how we might make it easier to opt-out.
