interalia's Introduction

Inter Alia

Inter Alia title

Inter Alia is an expanded version of Rasmus Andersson's beautiful open source sans serif typeface, Inter. Inter was specially designed for user interfaces with focus on high legibility of small-to-medium sized text on computer screens.

Inter Alia builds on the features of Inter to add:

  • support for the Shavian alphabet with a newly designed set of glyphs, including the letters missing from Unicode (through character variants accessed by inserting 'Variation Selector 1' (U+FE00) after 𐑒, 𐑜, 𐑢, 𐑤, 𐑻, and 𐑺)
  • support for old-style figures or numerals, also known as text figures, with both proportional and tabular spacing
  • refinements to International Phonetic Alphabet glyphs and other less common glyphs.

InterAliaFeatures

Support for additional scripts may be considered in future.

What to download (basic font files for everyday use)

Most users will want to download the OpenType files saved in instance_otf. To get the basic, standard set of font files, download:

If you have an older system and/or these files aren't working for some reason, you could try the equivalent TrueType files in instance_ttf

You will then need to install these fonts on your system, often by double clicking the files which should bring up a font manager program.

Design

Inter Alia expands the Inter typeface with additional glyphs and features. Inter is similar to Roboto, San Francisco, Akkurat, Asap, Lucida Grande and other "UI" and "Text" typefaces. Some trade-offs were made in order to make this typeface work really well at small sizes. For details of the underlying approach to designing Inter, please see https://github.com/rsms/inter.

Extended Shavian letters

The extended Shavian letters are either attested in Kingsley Read's work on Shavian (the letters here called 'oeuvre', 'yeah', and 'loch' appear in the Shaw-Script journal), are derived from Quikscript ('llan' and 'which') or are logically derived ('argh', for want of a better word in English).

They are not in Unicode so are a little tricky to produce. This requires using the 'Variation Selector 1' character in Unicode, U+FE00, as follows:

interalia's Issues

Add Ꝡꝡ glyphs

Hello, I'm a speaker of a constructed language called Toaq that has the v-y ligature Ꝡꝡ in its alphabet. Many of the community members are big Inter fans, and we'd love to have a version of Inter that supports this rare ligature.

Could you consider adding support for these glyphs, U+A760 and U+A761, to Inter Alia? (Officially it's a v-y ligature but in practice fonts seem to stick the tail from y onto W/w, and that looks great.)

Ꝡa kuaq kıe jí súq ka! (Thank you so much!) ❤️

Support for the base twelve digits ↊ and ↋

Hello, professional contrarian here. I'm a fan of the shavian alphabet, but I'm also a fan of base twelve. This is a bit of pain since there's plenty of good fonts that support one or the other, but almost none that support both. I was just looking for support for these two glyphs, since I already like this font a lot and would like to get more use out of it (also dont forget to make digit ten not stick out when its set it to text figures (even times new roman flubs this)).

Colon does not display properly in Firefox

When using the font to display web pages in Mozilla Firefox, the colon displays incorrectly. The lower dot of the colon is located in the usual place, but the upper dot is displaced four characters to the right.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Set the default font to Inter Alia.
  3. Open a web page which uses the browser default font.

Expected behavior
The colon should display with both dots in the same horizontal space.

Environment

  • OS: Microsoft Windows 10
  • App that renders the font: Mozilla Firefox, several versions
  • Version of font: Inter Alia 0.001

Add documentation on the new Shavian characters

Even if it is just in the GitHub issues, can you clearly document what the new characters are and what sounds they make?

for example, I was looking to reference your “wh” new letter for my handwriting, but I couldn’t find it and I’m unable to type inter-Alia text at the moment to access it.
