For me, the huge security hole resulting from the fact that compliation must be
allowed to take place (if dependencies are always to be handled correctly)
argues very strongly in favour of using an unprivileged system user.

in the past, I found myself installing the debianised package in the first
place to pull in the package manager dependencies (e.g. libraries which are
used with cffi etc.) and then use a newer version of the lisp code.

I've never used any of the existing Debian lisp packages and quicklisp means
there will never be more than a diminishing need to use them in the future, so I
say forget about them.

The way I see it, a savvy Debian lisp user needs to install just two Debian
packages; an implementation package, e.g., sbcl, and swiqlisp (once we've
created it).
