ppscan's Introduction

PPSCAN
======

QUICKNOTES: compile with gcc -o ppscan ppscan.c -lpthread, and run ./ppscan -h

Yes, it's yet-another-port-scanner. However, the goal of this port scanner
isn't to scan with tcp-connect or tcp-syn. Of course, it can do these things,
but there are far more feature rich scanners which do a lot of classification
and a lot more interesting things. This scanner's goal is to scan ports through
services which allow arbitrary connections.

Why is that useful? Well, think about the case where you need to pentest a
client and discover they're running tinyproxy on an edge node. You can actually
map out all the non-routable subnets the system is on if it is misconfigured.
Also think about the case where the admin has run some rigidly compliant FTP
server (GoldenFTP comes to mind here) and you can make arbitrary port
connections and use that information to determine internal nodes, and what
services are being run.

The other distinct advantage this scanner has is that it runs multiple scans in
parallel. For instance, if you need to scan an entire Class C subnet for 1 port
(ala propecia) doing so can be done just as quickly. Even better, you can set
a number of threads to execute and have the system scan multiple ports for said
network. Heck, make it a Class A network. PPSCAN doesn't care how big the
network happens to be.

All networks are specified in CIDR notation (meaning AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD/mask). If
you want a single host, just type it (ala AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD). If you are
specifying a masked network, the scanning will begin with the octets specified.
IE: 1.2.3.4/16 would be 1.2.255.255 skipping 1.2.1.0/24 and 1.2.2.0/24 and
1.2.3.1-3

Currently, banner grabbing isn't implemented, nor is http-auth. Those would be
great features to add - someone write a patch and submit it :)
