If you access it via a bookmark or direct type of url eg:

Change wording to question form like:

Error: How big is the can?

Error: How many cans in the box?

Move the validation around so that the validation message is stored in a data attribute.

Add in code so that it validates itself on blur. This will make the message disappear as soon as you type it rather than making you wait until the whole page is submitted again before updating.

Replace the existing page change validation check with a simple call that searches and validates all items in that page that has the attribute.
