Update: For me at least this had to do with that I had two installations of JDK on my machine, one for 1.7 and one for 1.6. Switching to 1.6 did not work well since the browser still tries to run 1.7 code on my 1.6 vm.
Switching back to 1.7 solves the problem.
From Java Console:
Java Plug-in 1.6.0_45
Using JRE version 1.7.0_21-b11 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM
User home directory = /home/xxx
c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
