This software provides Linux users with the ability to communicate with the Polar S710 heart rate monitor via the serial IR interface, native IR, and the USB interface (with the USB interface, the 's710d' utility is functional but the 's710sh' utility is not). If you wish to enable USB support, you need to have the libusb library (http://libusb.sf.net) installed, with version of at least 0.1.8. libusb supports Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. This software, however, has only been tested on Linux. The configure option for enabling USB is ./configure --with-usb If you have a 2.6 (Linux) kernel, this should work. If you have a 2.4 kernel, you will probably have to use USB bulk reads instead of interrupt reads. To do this, use ./configure --with-usb --enable-usb-bulk-read If you're not sure which you should use, try building with and without USB bulk read enabled. One of these should work. So far, bulk read works on 2.4 but not 2.6, and interrupt read works on 2.6 but not 2.4. USB support is disabled by default. You need to have the GD graphics library and header files installed in order to build this package. There are various plotting functions which require GD. Your GD version must include the gdImagePng() function (i.e. gd 1.8 or later). Thus, you must also have libpng installed on your system (thanks to Jan-Frode Myklebust (janfrode <at> parallab <dot> uib <dot> no) for pointing this out). Stefan Kleditzsch (kleditzsch <at> iwr <dot> uni-heidelberg <dot> de) decoded the CRC algorithm and has also figured out how to get native IR communication working, for users who have that capability. The two main utilities, s710d and s710sh, now take a -d argument which specifies the driver type to be used to communicate with the device. Valid values are "serial", "ir", and "usb". A device filename is required for -d values of "serial" and "ir", but not for "usb". If no -d option is given, it is the same as -d serial. Examples: s710d -d serial /dev/ttyS0 s710d -d ir /dev/ttyS0 s710d -d usb s710d /dev/ttyS0 (same as -d serial) YOU MUST HAVE WRITE PERMISSION TO THE DEVICE to use either s710d or s710sh with it. The easiest way to do this is to run the program as root. Also, s710sh does not currently work with the USB interface. This will be fixed relatively soon. A filtering function is provided which filters out invalid heart rate and cadence data. The maximum "valid" values for heart rate and cadence may be set at configure time, for example: ./configure --with-max-hr=210 --with-max-cad=160 The default values can be found in configure.ac. The directory where downloaded workout files are stored is /var/polar/s710/raw by default. It can be set at configure time using the --with-filedir option; for example: ./configure --with-filedir=/home/dave/.s710/raw Robert Estes (estes <at> transmeta <dot> com) supplied a number of corrections to errors I had made in decoding parts of the file format. He also decoded the lap speed and temperature values. Max Matveev (makc <at> sgi <dot> com) decoded a good deal more of the file format, including average and max speed, OwnCal quantities, where the user ID and exercise name are stored, and more. Matti Tahvonen (matti <at> tahvonen <dot> com) introduced support for interval mode in the S625X, the S710, and the S720i. This had been on the todo list for a long time.
