Sometime in 1998 or 1999, we scraped a pole at a gas station, which did some minor damage to the rear side panels. In addition, there are some longish scraps in the paint, and some rust from this accident. The scrapes begin on the door, and the dents to the exterior start right beyond the sliding door, and then moslty around the wheel well.

Service History

We bought the Westie from a retired couple in Connecticut back in 1998. My recollection was that they were the second owners, they bought it from an RV shop in FL. Further, I think that the original owners hit a piece of rebar on the highway that punctured their oil pan, and ended up seizing their engine. So a new engine was installed at somewhere around the 60K mark. The second owners had the but up to about 95K. We bought it in CT, and drove it back to Davis, CA where it's been ever since.

For the first 15 years or so, I did as much work on the bus as possible. Most of those were pretty minor fixes, but there were a couple of large items that we had done in that time, that I recall. Driving back from CT, we noticed some gas leaks, so we had the fuel lines all redone.

Sometime, probably around 2007, we had a new transmission put in. This was at Larry'z Auto Works, in Sacramento. When they put that in, they modified the gear ratios slightly so that it has a slightly higher top speed for say about 80.

Since 2012, I've been taking it exclusively to Stephan's Auto Haus for repairs. They are honsetly a bit of a pain to get to from Davis, but the service is great. I've included the service history from them in Issue #5.

Accidents

After we took ownership, we have never been in any accidents at speed. We've had two minor mishaps, at parking speeds.

Sometime in the first few months of owning that, we grazed a pole at a gas station, which resulted in the damage on the rear Passenger side back panels, the damage is shown in Issue #3.

In December, 2011, our bumper hooked another bumper while parallel parking. That's something we didn't notice till we snapped the bumper in half 👎 . The damage for that is shown in Issue #4.

In 2011, I hooked another bumber while parellel parking, and didn't notice till I snapped the bumper in two. Joyfully, there was really no damage at all to the body or any of the connection points. At the time, I there were no replacement parts for this type of bumper. I Bought a replacement vanagon bumper, but they are quite a bit smaller, and I didn't like how it looked. So, In the end, I patched my old bumper with PC-107, and left it that way. It's solid, and I've grown fond of the scar, and won't be replacing this.

I've gone through the van, and I can find the following dings to the upholstery that need fixing

• The top part of the fabric is worn through on the driver seat.
• There is a small hole in driver's seat.
• There is a ~ 1½" hole in the vinyl on the passenger side
• There are some more minor holes in the vinyl on the passenger side.

Driver's Seat

There is a about a nickel size area that's been worn through the top. It only goes through the top part of the fabric.

I think, I should be able to iron in some fusible backing in to make it a bit stronger, and then do a little bit of hand darning to patch that.

Passenger's Seat

This cut through the vinyl is probably the worst damage to the Upholstery on the whole car. I remember when this happened, we were picking up some u-channel fence materials, and just slid those steel piceces right into the back. That's where the distinctive shape comes from.

I can't see of any convenient way to get at these. I'm thinking I might be able to slip a little fusible fabrice through the back to shore it up, and then maybe some fine sewing with invisible thread?

Cleaning

I took the upholstery from the 3 marge pads (1 in back, 2 on roof), and washed those separately along with all the curtains. The rest of the upholstery was cleaned w/ a carpet cleaner along with the floors.
