browser's Issues

Mozilla telemetry tracking issue

This is a big list of all of the Mozilla telemetry that we need to remove at some point.

General settings

  • MOZ_TELEMETRY_REPORTING
  • MOZ_SERVICES_HEALTHREPORT
  • MOZ_NORMANDY
  • MOZ_CRASHREPORTER (Community input: Is it acceptable to have our own crash reporter endpoint?)

Potential pitfalls

These are some potential pitfalls that we may have to deal with:

  • When MOZ_UPDATE_CHANNEL is set to beta, custom prefs roll out (we will use different names for alpha and stable)

If you have any other potential telemetry points, please let us know and we will add them to this list.

Browser Sidebar

Add a visible sidebar to pulse browser that will facilitate the space to add more features that are readily accessible on the user's screen. The proposed sidebar includes room for default actions like bookmarks, history, tabs and extensions that want to utilize the sidebar.

Rebrand about:welcome

This issue has been created for tracking purposes around rebranding about:welcome.

Newtab Conversion

Our current new tab page on Pulse Browser is bland and needs a lot of improvement. Until further progress on the new tab project conversion to tabliss (A project Tricky has contributed to) is suitable.

Create a fingerprinting spoofter

Whilst Firefox has a built in fingerprinting spoofer, it is fairly invasive and can be detected. Here are some other ideas for future releases:

  • Subtle random noise in the canvas, based on a seed that persists for the entire browsing session
  • Randomize parts of the useragent that are non-critical (e.g. x11 vs wayland on linux)
  • Randomly enable and disable some fonts
  • Randomize the webgl vendor
  • Randomize DNT
  • Randomize hardware concurrency within ~2 of the real value

Note that all of this should be done on a whole session basis to avoid detection by fingerprinters and blacklisting.

Productivity improver thing

The problem

I am unproductive. I spend way to much time on github / youtube and not enough doing actual helpful work. It would be nice if there was something that increased the friction of using those sites

The solution

Something to find once I am done with school for the term. This is defiantly a future me problem.

Sidebar Appears on Fullscreen Video

When the user is watching a video in fullscreen mode, the sidebar box remains on the screen and serves no purpose other than holding space on screen.

Issue made for tracking purposes.

Pop out websites

Allow for websites to be popped out into separate windows. This would allow us to replace the functionality of Pennywise

PWA support

PWA support implementation for Firefox. Issue created for tracking purposes.

Correct browser branding

There are several hardwritten nightly branding images/text scattered around the browser.
As a result, the browser cannot be rebranded using the configuration files and must be done manually.

This issue has been created for tracking reasons around rebranding nightly.

Things that are broken

  • MacOS's installer file is put in the wrong location (#36)
  • Windows full installer has nightly images (engine/browser/branding/*/wiz*.bmp)
  • Windows 10/11 use nightly images
  • The windows installer puts our code in Mozilla Developer Preview
  • Browser help branding
  • MacOS still uses nightly icons (#81 )
  • MacOS still uses Nightly name (#81 )
  • Default Firefox Bookmarks
  • Private Browsing using Logo Nightly

Better extension handling

This is primarily an architecture issue, but we need to handle extensions better. Most of these changes will be made inside of gluon, but have a large impact on the browser. The following needs to change:

  • Static urls should be avoided, instead a platform, extension and version should be provided. Platforms:
  • @fushra-robot (or maybe a bot implemented using probot) should file update issues and maybe pull requests
  • Update manifests should be generated and hosted on updates.pulsebrowser.app

MacOS CI

This issue has been created for tracking purposes

Better readme

The current README does not provide enough information. Beta README should be updated to provide the viewer with needed information.

General Information:

  • Browser logo

  • Informative Browser description

  • Browser Images

  • List of Features

Shields:

  • Shield Discord

  • Shield Build Status

  • Shield Github Stars

Check and change file paths

There are almost certainly some hard coded Mozilla file paths somewhere that we will have to find and filter out.
