codeology's Introduction

Codeology

Codeology brings to life the art and science of code. An algorithm analyzes GitHub projects and creates unique organic forms based on the codebase size and language. As no two pieces of code are alike, no two Codeology forms are alike.

How it works

The application pulls data from GitHub’s public API and creates visuals using WebGL, Three.js, and GLSL Shaders. Shape and color represent an individual language, with size being proportionate to how many characters of code were written.

Setting up node modules

  • Source files are located in /src folder and compiled to /dist folder.
  • Build files are located in /build folder.

To setup required node modules just run: npm install.

Compile

To compile all files to dist folder, run: grunt. If you need live compiling (separately: images, fonts, js and scss), just run: grunt watch.

Release

To release project with clean code, run: grunt release.

codeology's Issues

Project does not work on Chrome 59.

I imagine this project may be abandoned by now, but just letting you know that in 2017 this project fails on Chrome 59 with:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'username' of undefined
    at showGrid (scripts.min.js:2)
    at HTMLDivElement.onMouseClick (scripts.min.js:2)
    at HTMLDivElement.dispatch (libs.min.js:18)
    at HTMLDivElement.q.handle (libs.min.js:18)
[.Offscreen-For-WebGL-0x7fc3ac0bfc00]RENDER WARNING: there is no texture bound to the unit 0

CSS+JS-only effect?

Any tips on rendering the animated random characters using CSS / JS / Canvas?

Thanks

Server code

Is there source code for the api of the server?

Running locally? Also, deleting or moving unpacked build gives, "Source Path Too Long"

Hello!
I've followed the instructions and issued the following:
$ path-to-codeology-master/build> npm install

This gives the following warnings:
npm WARN deprecated [email protected]: Grunt needs your help! See https://github.com/gruntjs/grunt/issues/1403. npm WARN deprecated [email protected]: graceful-fs version 3 and before will fail on newer node releases. Please update to graceful-fs@^4.0.0 as soon as possible. npm WARN deprecated [email protected]: lodash@<3.0.0 is no longer maintained. Upgrade to lodash@^4.0.0.

$ path-to-codeology-master/build> grunt
$ path-to-codeology-master/build> grunt watch
$ path-to-codeology-master/build> grunt release

I only see the index.html at the root. How would I go about running the node server, to launch the project locally?

Also, when deleting or moving the entire unpacked project, which has a lot of files under multiple folders causes windows to give me a, "Source Path Too Long" error.

Thanks in advance,
Arnab
