indexby is simple enough to implement, this will remove dependence on lodash.

I've seen the project is quite outdated and some pull request are open with no response. I also created a new pull request related to lodash

It would be nice to have an option to set the limit of populated items - as there can be thousands of them and it's not very useful to have such a huge response...

If we can also support a skip parameter - that would be just perfect.

I see you have removed the limit option, can we put it back?

To get the populated objects in your object directly, just change this:

var reversePopulate = require('mongoose-reverse-populate');

//the next step requires access to the 'Author' and 'Post' mongoose model

Author.find().exec(function(err, authors) {
    reversePopulate(authors, "posts", true, Post, "author", function(err, popAuthors) {
        //popAuthors will be populated with posts under .posts property
    });
});

to this:

var reversePopulate = require('mongoose-reverse-populate');

//the next step requires access to the 'Author' and 'Post' mongoose model

Author.find().lean().exec(function(err, authors) {
    reversePopulate(authors, "posts", true, Post, "author", function(err, popAuthors) {
        //popAuthors will be populated with posts under .posts property
    });
});

Notice the .lean() command after .find(). This returns a directly editable javascript object instead of a mongoose schema, and in here, the .posts property is directly accessible.
