maintainer is Philip Kime (© 2023).

This package is a biblatex style for APA (American Psychological
Association) style compliant documents typeset in LaTeX. It
implements a citation style (apa.cbx) and a references section style
(apa.bbx). The styles are loaded just like any other biblatex
styles but I wouldn't try to use the citation and references styles
separately as they rely on each other, macro-wise, in places.

In this document and in the code, the specific APA requirements are
referred to by the section and (if appropriate) the example number of the
APA Style Guide 7th Edition).

You will need to be using csquotes >= 4.3 and biblatex >= 3.4 The biber
backend for biblatex >= 2.5 is also required. This style will not work
correctly if using bibtex as the backend for biblatex. If you want to take
advantage of the biblatex \DeclareQuotePunctuation facility to enforce the
APA required "American punctuation", you should use the babel package with
the "american" option (see biblatex manual section |3.9.1|). You can of
course use other languages but in such cases, to adhere to APA "American"
punctuation rules (following commas moved inside closing quotes etc.), then
you should set up \DeclareQuotePunctuation yourself as per section 4.7.5 of
the biblatex manual.

You can also use this with apa.cls version 1.3.4 or greater by using the 
"noapacite" class option to that class package (which prevents it from
trying to use plain bibtex with the apacite package).

Printing of journal issue numbers

Hello,

thanks for providing the apa style in biblatex! Recently I discovered that this style is always printing the journal issue number after the volume number. According to APA v6 this should only be done if the journal is paginated seperately by issue (see page 199 of the manual as well):

It is only checking for journals that have issues paginated seperately by issue. Before doing a real pull request I wanted to ask what do you think about this extension? I see following issues right now:

only journaltitle is checked and not journal
the jounals here are hardcoded. Is it possible to check a user created list instead? (Sorry, I'm no tex expert.)

Missing period after URL

I am using the most recent version of the biblatex-apa package (from 2015-01-24) and there is an issue with the bibliography for references of the "@online" style. In the bibliography I get author, year, title, accessed date, and URL, but there is no period following the URL. Is there some other bit of information I should be providing in the reference, or is that period just missing?

Capital letters protected with {braces} displayed in lowercase

This MWE featuring protected letters in the title of the reference outputs the letter ‘b’ of ‘beauties’ in lowercase. This shouldn't be the case AFAIK.

I compiled it with:

It seems to me that protection with braces worked as expected with the current versions of pdfTeX and biber as of mid-October 2017.

"and others" problem with just single explicit author and others

I have the following database entry (from https://inspirehep.net/record/1315584/export/hx):

Journal articles in special issues

When citing articles in special or supplementary issues, for which the biblatex manual suggests to use the issue field (implied on p. 20), the issue number appears in the text citation, but not in the references (I expected the reverse outcome).

It works when using the number field instead, but Zotero BetterBiblatex will not let me export non-numeric issues to the number field. In any case, given the biblatex recommendation, the correct field should be issue.

As per the APA-style blog, articles from supplementary issues should be cited and referenced as any other journal article, although necessarily tagged with the correct issue ("Suppl. 1" below). Hence, in the MWE below, I expect the reference entry to be

Caselli, F. & Coleman II, W. J. (2013). On the Theory of Ethnic Conflict. Journal of the European Economic Association, 11(Suppl. 1). ,

but I get

Caselli, F. & Coleman II, W. J. (2013). On the Theory of Ethnic Conflict. Journal of the European Economic Association, 11. ,

and I expect the citation

english-apa.lbx uses wrong command

The english-apa.lbx uses \DefineBibliographyExtras instead of \DeclareBibliographyExtras. As the first is an "only preamble" command this leads to errors if the files are loaded after \begin{document}.

Space after ellipsis

If there are more than 7 editors, there is no space after the ellipsis. There is no example in "Publication
Manual of the American Psychological Association" (Sixth Edition, 2010) though. If there are more than 7 autors, there is indeed a space after the ellipsis. Information on editors should be treated like information on authors. Note the following MWE:

I can reproduce the problem in miktex which has already biblatex 3.5 / biber 2.6.

Fixing reviews and peer commentaries (7.06)

The code for reviews and peer commentaries needs some fixing.

The comment on 7.06:45 in biblatex-apa-test-references.bib states:

% The comma after the reviewed title is ommited for consistency, as per 7.06:48

Including the year is fine. But ommiting the comma for consistency turns things upside down. The model notation on p. 208 is:

... [Review of the book Title of book, by A. A. Author]. ...

Also all the examples except for 48, that is 45 to 47, have the comma. Thus, for consistency the comma should be kept and added in 48.

Just a minor issue: The APA manual has 7.06:48 wrong. The example there is

Wolf, K. S. (2005). The future for Deaf individuals is not that bleak [Peer commentary on the paper "Decrease of Deaf potential in a mainstreamed environment" by K. S. Wolf). Retrieved from http://www.personalityresearch.org/papers/hall.html#wolf

However, looking up that website, the original paper the comment is on is by W. C. Hall. Here is a fix for biblatex-apa-test-references.bib

The comment on 7.06:46 in biblatex-apa-test-references.bib states:

I don't agree. "produced by" is not redundant because it has a distinguishing function. For example, "BioShock" in example 47 is produced by 2K Games, whereas the games' authors are Ken Levine, Scott Sinclair and Paul Hellquist. Possibly, this can be added. The entry "apavid2" already uses the field "producer", the entry "bioshock" uses "author".

Error with \enquote* in entry title

I am not sure whether this is a biblatex-apa or a csquotes issue. Anyway, it you use \enquote* (only the starred version) in an entry title, LaTeX bails out with an error:

I've run across a `}' that doesn't seem to match anything.
For example, `\def\a#1{...}' and `\a}' would produce

\textcites and \parencites produce additional space when line breaks betwean citations

When citing multiple authors using \textcites or \parencites ther is a space too much at the end or the beginning of a line, when the line breaks between two citations.

Note that with pdfLaTeX the undesired behaviour was present even before 3.10. This is due to the harmonisation of the ellipsis in plk/biblatex@5de1c77 following plk/biblatex#514.

PS: Should 'United States' and 'United Kingdom' not be protected against case changes in the .bib files?

Reprint from article

I'm using TeXLive 2018 (updated to the latest packages) with biblatex-apa, and I'm trying to reference a journal article reprint found in a book chapter. The best output I can get is:

For some reason the "Reprinted from" part is ignoring the reprint reference's date, journaltitle, and volume. Here's the bib entry for the primary source:

Nodate String and German Localisation

In ngerman-apa.lbx the bibstring for nodate is not defined; keeping in line with biblatex's german.lbx one would probably want (I added a missing space)

(this translates to "without/no date") or even ("no year")

Using this together with ngerman-apa.lbx though, one will find that in the bibliography the D in "o. D." is converted to lowercase.
This seems to be rooted in \mkbibdateapalongmdy and friends using \biblcstring when calling bibstrings, changing it to \bibstring indeed solves the problem.

One might add though that this alone would cause the "O" to be capitalised in the parentheses as well (which is undesirable as far as I can see) if there was not an empty group before it in the bibstring. One could probably also get rid of this problem by injecting a \midsentence somewhere.

DefineBibliographyStrings unable to access string set with NewBibliographyString

I encountered a problem using biblatex-apa. The uri field is not set in verbatim mode, at least in conjunction with lualatex and polyglossia set to german.

However, the biblatex-apa-test-references.bib has a comment

Note this renders with a period before the LOCATION which is more consistent with other entries

I'm not convinced, it think it may actually be the other way round. The pattern seems to be

place/building/event, city, country.

Compare also to 7.05:44 and 7.10:65-70. Only 7.10:69 has a period. That is, however, in the way

Project, organization. Archive, city, country.

Thus, there is still a comma and not a period before city.
So in need of correction may be the code handling 7.04:36, 7.09:58, and 7.10:70.

missing space between month name and day in citation and reference when two dates are provided

Hi,
there seems to be a problem with the handling of multiple dates for one entry.

biblatex-apa v. 7.2:

When I use \textcite{Engelbart1984} in my text, I get: ...
...solutions in Engelbart (1984–March1).

And in the reference list:

Engelbart, D. C. (1984, February 27–March1). Authorship provisions in augment.

Note the missing space after March.
I also have an entry with a single year-month-day date field, there the space after month is correctly set.

The biblatex date is right according to the manual:

The workaround is pretty simple, enclose in an extra pair of braces, or \protect the macro.

There is no problem with numeric, it seems to be specific to apa. Is that on purpose and the user should take care of correct input?

PS: the macro in the author field does not throw an error, but the output is quite unexpected :-)

Personal Communications

As you are very likely aware, biblatex-apa does not accommodate for in-text citation of personal communications (APA manual section 6.20). I have come across two possible solutions, but they do not integrate well into the biblatex-apa style specifically. So my actual workaround has been manually typing in these types of citations.

If a personal communication is added to a list of other in-text citations, there is no way to allow for automated alphabetical sorting, especially if the author's last name is between the letters of two other citations.

I am already using misc type in my bib for citing statutes.

Are there plans to include the personal communication as part of biblatex-apa?

German localization issues

Where are the bibstrings typechair and typechairs supposed to be used? The German translations are definitely wrong ("Konferenzstuhl" literally translates "chair" as a seating furniture), but I'd need the context in order to decide on an appropriate translation (I suppose it should be something such as "Konferenzleitung" or "Konferenzmoderation", referring to a person who chairs a conference or session).

I am also not sure whether producer, execproducer, director and writer are really translated properly. Again, this depends on the context where they are supposed to be used.

German APA, adding details for foreign language publications according to DGP

The latest manual from the DGP 4th ed. from 2016 (and also the former 3rd ed.) handles entries of foreign language publications a little different than the APA manual. Not only the year of the original publication is given (as in APA 7.02:21) but also title and/or author when these are not identical with the translated edition. Two examples are given, on p. 119 and p. 155:

Documentation implies that sortcites=false, but this is no longer true

Section 4.1 of the manual seems to imply that sortcites=false, but this is no longer true. The manual currently states:

Please note that APA style does not have multiple citation lists sorted—they appear in the order cited. Since \fullcitebib is a citation command, the citations will not be sorted which might appear odd since this «citation» style looks like a references section excerpt. There is no way around this since the sortcites biblatex option is a package-level option. If you want to customise such a fake references section «citation», you should probably be using \printbibliography with a filter.

Captialize first word after Colon

According to the style guide:

When referring to books, chapters, articles, or Web pages, capitalize only the first letter of the first word of a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and proper nouns. Do not capitalize the first letter of the second word in a hyphenated compound word.

Portuguese mapping is funny with polyglossia

I'm able of producing a bibliography with biblatex and the apa style, but without getting the warning below.

Package biblatex Warning: File 'portuges-apa.lbx' not found!
    Ignoring mapping 'portuges' -> 'portuges-apa'

I think that this problem exists because biblatex-apa is correctly naming its file to portuguese-apa.lbx but because of an ancient orthographic error, from the 80s, the babel and now polyglossia packages are calling the portuges files.

DeclareLabeldate incomplete or buggy

Not sure if this is an upstream bug (I had to do the same in one of my own style files), but with biblatex 3.5, you need to add \field{year}to the \DeclareLabeldate definition in biblatex-apa in order to get a proper year (rather than "nodate").

Warn when `backend=bibtex`

Many users assume that either bibtex or biber can be used as the backend with biblatex. However, bibtex is not anymore supported with the apa style. When a user tries backend=bibtex, the error message is

which is very opaque. Eventually, I found the relevant piece of information in the biblatex-apa documentation but it cost me a fair bit of time.

It think it would he helpful if biblatex-apa could emit a warning message when the user attempts to use bibtex.

By the way, thank you for biblatex, biblatex-apa, and biber. It's a great pleasure to work with them.

Missing comma for two family-given names

The comma before the "&" is missing. I had this checked with the printed APA manual, and http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2017/03/how-to-create-references-when-words-in-the-title-are-italicized.html also suggests that there should be a comma before the "&" even if there are only two authors.

One cant simply change finalnamedelim since names in 'given family' order should follow the 'normal' rules for Oxford commas. Cf. 7.02:25 where "M. Eid & R. J. Larsen" without comma is correct.

"Available from" or "Retrieved from"?

The comment in biblatex-apa-test-references.bib on example 7.07:49, that is,

American Psychological Association (Producer). (2000). Responding therapeutically to patient expressions of sexual attraction [DVD]. Retrieved from http://www.apa.org/videos/

reads

We render this with "retrieved from" instead of "available from" as this is arbitrary and ugly to parameterise. Forcing this means we can use a localisable string for "retrieved"

However, I'm not convinced by this argument. Consider you buy access to an online video via http://www.apa.org/videos/ - I think in this case "Retrieved from" would actually be fine. However, in the case of the source cited, it's a DVD. You do not retrieve a DVD from http://www.apa.org/videos/, you order it via this link. It's actually available via http://www.apa.org/videos/. Shouldn't there be the option to have "Available from" for such cases?

Release version 7.0

Since biblatex 3.5 has arrived on CTAN, are there any plans to release version 7.0 soon?
Version 6.9 will throw errors when run on biblatex 3.5, this has already caused some grievance on TeX.SX style=apa causes bibliography to fail.

Compile error with biber 2.2 and biblatex 3.1 in american-apa with babel

Hi,
first of all thanks for the awesome work.
I just updated my MikTex installation and now I have got biber 2.2 with biblatex3.1 and I use TexStudio 2.10.4 on Win 7 x64
The biblatex-apa package is still version 6.7
When I try to compile, I get the following error. I also tried it several times and also cleared auto-generated files in my work dir, but still getting the error.
With biber 1.9 it worked fine. Any help appreciated.

Hardcoded comma in url specification

The url+urldate bibmacro inserts a hardcoded comma between urldate and the from bibstring. This conforms to the English APA guidelines (as in: "retrieved [date], from"), but is not correct in some localisations (at least in German, there should not be a comma: "Zugriff [date] unter").

I suggest to add a macro \urldatecomma (or somesuch) that can be modified in the lbx.

Create a directory structure for biblatex-apa

You will find that in the first block the subsequent citation to the OECD source still triggers the full author (interestingly without the brackets - though that seems intentional with sabrackets?), while the second block correctly shows the shortauthor.

This seems to have to do with the placement of cite:post, if it is moved to the loopcode, every work triggers its use. With

nodate string localisation files issue

When using any localisation file other than english-apa.lbx or american-apa.lbx, the entries with no date make a "nodate" bibstring literal appear in the reference list, instead of n.d. or s.f. (latter if using Spanish).
More details to reproduce the issue. I initialize the package as shown in the instructions:

Testentry1 is based on APA examples 7.02:19 (Electronic version of print book) and 7.02:21 (Electronic version of republished book). 7.02:21 is actually a reprint of a book published as part of a larger book and thus as a chapter, which is why it is using entry type INBOOK.

INBOOK works fine. Testentry1 and testentry2, however, being entry type BOOK, erroneously have a period after the url and doi, respectively. They give

FWIW, I have been able to alter this behaviour in apa.bbx, but I haven't tested my changes thoroughly and am not too sure I understand how the code is structured. If it's helpful, though, I can provide details.

Typo in danish-apa.lbx

Line 2: \InheritBibliographyExtras{dansih} should be \InheritBibliographyExtras{danish}.
