dsfix's Issues

fps unlock toggle?

Hello

Is is possible to make toggleFPSUnlock keybinding, so we can play at 60 fps and switch to 30 when long jumping is needed?

Feature Request: mouse speed control

Anyone who's playing with a mouse, must have felt the mouse speed for camera rotation is too high by any standards.

Would be great to be able to control the ratio of speed of camera rotation to mouse movement.

Game freezes in the middle of fading in the “PRESS START BUTTON” title card

Dearest peter, thank you so much for this mod, but ever since the last patch I absolutely cannot start the game with DSFix enabled, even the newest version — it loads save data just fine, but then freezes in the middle of fading in the “PRESS START BUTTON” title card.
I’ve tried using the .ini with zero changes, I’ve tried disabling absolutely everything but no result.

When DSFix remowed game working fine. OS Windows 8.1

Changing internal rendering resolution only affects window resolution.

When changing internal resolution in DSfix.ini, the game is seemingly still rendered in the default 1024x720 resolution, while the render window changes resolution. The HUD still renders correctly. Setting the values to 1024x720 will fill the window, as seen in the following screenshot:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7335929/1024x720.jpg

Setting the horizontal resolution higher will squish the rendered output vertically as seen in the following screenshot:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7335929/1280x720.jpg

Setting the vertical resolution higher will squish the rendered output vertically as seen in the following screenshot:

FPS decay problem

Hello, I'm not a programmer so I don't think I'll be able to quickly pinpoint the real culprit, but I think I chased this problem to a corner. I will copy-paste a post I've been making on various forums, trying to get people's attention. It contains the description of the problem and the necessary steps to reproduce it.

I've tested this on:

  • 2 Different PCs, one being a high-end 980ti PC, another being a crappy 400$ laptop
  • Both W10 and W7
  • With and without installing MSI AB and using its overclocking
  • With and without drivers for various other hardware
  • With various Windows power options and C1/3/6 states in bios

The results are simple:

If you have DSfix installed, the max FPS decays over time, regardless of any other DSfix options. With or without custom textures, borderless, windowed, fullscreen, disabled cursor - those settings don't matter at all. The only thing that matter is DSFix and unlocked FPS.

How does the decay work?

When you launch the game, you sit at 60.3 FPS without VSync ('ripple'-tearing really evident) or 60.0 FPS with Vsync (game plays really smooth). Backspace shows 30.0 FPS. About ~20-25 minutes later, both Vsync and non-vsync choices drop to 59.7 and don't go up anymore (before that moment the FPS kinda 'bumps' from time to time, sometimes going to 59.7, but always returning to 60.0+). You can only see decimal FPS using MSI AB, so if you're using Steam overlay and want to test this, do it without Vsync. When you launch the game, steam overlay will move between 60-61, but ~25 minutes later you'll stop seeing 61 at all - it will move between 59 and 60.

During this 59.7 phase, the 'backspace' FPS is still 30.0. Sometimes 59.7 drops even further to 59.6 or 59.5 - this is a bit inconsistent between my tests. If that happens, the backspace FPS drops to 29.8.

~30-50 minutes later it turns to 58.8. Stuttering becomes really noticeable, regardless of vsync setting. The backspace FPS drops even further.

After 8-9 hours the backspace FPS drops lower than 28, while the normal FPS drops below 56. I haven't tested it longer than that.

Now, how do I prove it happens due to DSFix if you can't force more than 30 FPS without it? That's why I closely watched the 'backspace' FPS during my tests. If you delete DSFix, you'll be having the 30 FPS cap, and if this problem wasn't related to DSFix, it would still decay in the same way - 29.8 and then dropping below 28 after 8-9 hours.

Yet it doesn't. After 9 hours of sleep, I woke up to stable 30 FPS with DSfix files deleted from the game folder.

So... I really don't know WTF is going on, especially with literally no one else reporting this.
The only way to actually notice this stuttering is to play non-stop more than ~1.5 hours. Or maybe I'm missing something. While it's definitely DSFix's fault, it might be tied to something else.

There is one thing that's common between my 980ti rig and laptop: both use Nvidia drivers 353+. My 980ti simply can't use any lower drivers due to this one being the first to support this card, but the laptop could probably use some DDU -> 320.xx testing.

It's not hard to test this. Simply leave the game running for 2+ hours with any FPS-checking software. Before doing that make sure that your current settings allow for constant 60 FPS (since I have a feeling that this problem doesn't occur if your FPS goes all over the place while you're doing stuff in game). Stand somewhere where your MSI AB shows 60.3 (with vsync off) or in case of steam overlay - 60-61 jumps.

Please poke me if you want me to test anything out - I'm closely watching this.

Release request

Hey, @PeterTh it would be awesome to update binary release.
There is fixed texture loading stuttering on latest merges, but last binary version does not includes it.

Texture prefetch memory leak (?)

With enableTexturePrefetch set to 1 custom textures are loaded into memory each time after switching windowed/fullscreen modes and/or alt-tabbing from fullscreen. This results in exceeding accessible memory and crash.

rewrite to minhook

MSDetours is a buggy mess, causing instabilities for the application and making it a pain in the ass to compile.

And which version for which version of Dark Souls?

This information wasn't noted on the readme file, and the fps unlocker crashes the game before it starts so I assume v2.4 is not compatible with my disc copy version whatever version that is. Or provide update files for the appropriate version or even an option to pick which version you want to use it on....

Use git tags/github releases

It would be nice to host copies of dsfix on GitHub using github releases. This has the advantage of pinning the binaries to the commit hash of the source code.

Crashes on startup when forceFullscreen is 1.

  1. Copy contents of zip file to [...]\SteamApps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA.
  2. Edit DSfix.ini with notepad.exe, specify forceFullscreen 1.
  3. Launch game.

Crash.

Here's my dxdiag.exe output:

Alternate HUD graphical glitches (Item Randomizer compatibility issue?)

  • It seems the completely wrong asset is used for a frame or so when toggling gear & items with the DPad.
  • During the fade in to any cutscene there are a couple large black squares in a sorta checkerboard pattern that appear.
  • When talking to NPC's the positioning of the semi-transparent image that's supposed to be behind the NPC dialogue subtitles to improve text clarity is split and displayed in all the wrong areas of the screen.

I'm using the Item Randomizer https://github.com/HotPocketRemix/DarkSoulsItemRandomizer and it requires the assets of the game to be unpacked, I'm unsure if the glitches have always been an issue with DSFix's Alternate HUD or if it's a compatibility issue with the assets being unpacked (the game is modified to refer to the unpacked copies)

Stuttering when using Texture Override

Hello, i know here is warning "will cause a small slowdown during texture loading", but what i see, is not small slowdown, game freezes for 1-4 seconds.
What causes this freezes? I have i7-3770s and installed Dark Souls on SSD drive.

Stuttering appears in random places, but mostly in Queelag Domain, when you warp to Chaos Sister bonfire. And only with this mod installed: http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/194/

Maybe you can fix that freezes by caching texture hashes, or loading all textures in memory during startup, so we don't need to load them from disk?

I'm not c programmer and don't know directx, but if you give some hints i can try to fix this myself :)

Can't Alt-Tab on Win 10

When I have DSFix installed, I can't alt tab in Windows 10.
What happens is, I alt tab out fine, and can use my computer, but I can't go back to the game, when I do, it crashes.

Outdated

Repository is outdated, should be upgraded to respect changes in 2.4.

Subtitles, Boss HP, and various graphical bugs when using hud mod.

Using these settings you get graphical errors with subtitles (the text box is actually split), Retrieval/Victory/Etc screens (semi transparent black boxes out of place on screen), and Boss HP bar is messed up. I can provide screen shots if you need them
