opensourcediversity.org's Issues

Add first contributions in Basics section

First contributions is a project to help beginners to get started with contributing to open source projects.

We have a hands-on tutorial, a web app to find projects to contribute to and a slack community to ask questions and get help.

Here's a code snippet that could go in to opensourcediversity.org

Ideas for future of Open Source Ladies meetup

At the meetup (02.05.18) we (@jancborchardt @sleepypioneer @suntala and I) collected some ideas of what we want to make of the meetup, and how to go about it. Not everything here needs to happen that way and nothing is set in stone, but I think it's a good idea to write what was said down and be able to point to it and talk about it more.

  • have topics for each meetup, focus on working on a specific project
    • Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, Nextcloud, Wikidata, Fedora, GitLab, Mozilla, Bahmni, Discourse, …
    • non-code contributions like editing Wikipedia or OpenStreetMap, design, writing documentation, translation etc.
    • other projects from e.g. RailsGirls summer of code or Outreachy
    • Projects directly concerned with diversity: Speakerinnen, Diversitytickets, Open Source Diversity website, Bl00dyHealth, WheelMap, Co-lab by Arati, SignDict, …
    • Big projects but also smaller, quicker-to-get-involved ones
  • Maybe even 2 times in a row because first time might be needed for setup
  • Could be about host company (Wikimedia, Nextcloud, …)
  • Help projects add Code of Conduct, good first issues, …
  • Do another hackathon day!
  • rename Open Source Ladies to Β»Open Source Diversity BerlinΒ«?
  • Workshop through OpenTechSchool on how to contribute to open source
  • partnerships with language-specific meetups like PyLadies, RailsGirls/code_curious
  • aggregate articles and events on website
  • STICKERS & tshirts!
  • Open Source Diversity Summit
  • Talk at more conferences

Custom font on the site doesn't load (broken link)

The URL for the font in the css points to ../fonts/Nunito-Bold.ttf but the font files are located in the css folder. Either the URL should be updated accordingly, or the files should be moved to a new fonts folder in the root (probably depending on what y'all prefer, structure-wise).

This would be a really good first issue for someone looking to contribute ✨

Add GHC, GHCI and Tapia Conferences under Program Sections

Both the Grace Hopper Conferences(GHC and GHCI) and the Tapia Conference are excellent opportunities for women for presenting their work, and networking with other professionals, students and companies from around the world. Both conferences are held annually. GHC has a sister conference held annually in India, called Grace Hopper Conference India(GHCI).
All the 3 conferences are largely for promoting diversity and inclusion.
GHC: https://ghc.anitab.org/
Tapia: http://tapiaconference.org/
GHCI: https://ghcindia.anitab.org/

All these conferences have a travel scholarship awarded to students and academicians.

Retaining women in open source: Organising open source day monthly

Hi folks: Finding an active open source contributor or maintainer woman is hard or nearly none. Internships give a break in open source, if observed there is no retention of women in open source and research[1] suggests. Implementing open source day per month letting woman work with mentor and contribute in an open source project they would like would be practical implementation than just publishing research and articles. Lemme know if you would interested in supporting and I will share further things.

Use Twitter API to add latest tweets from Open Source Diversity to the website.

Need to decide where this should go on page. Also include a follow button?

Please invite me to the GitHub Organization

I'm a Web Dev enthusiast & a junior pursuing my Bachelors in Computer Science & Engineering. I'm interested in Web Devlopment, Machine Learning & DevOps & I enjoy learning new things & stuff as well as I'm a Frontend Devloper with experience building Dynamic & Static Web pages. I am always interested in learning the answers to how, why, and what relates to the Technologies around me.

I would like to grow my programming skills by doing lots of Open Source contributions. Looking forward to learning, collaborating, and growing as a community.

Adding "First Timers Only" on basics section

I thought it would be nice to provide additional guidance for newbies diving into open source... https://www.firsttimersonly.com/ provides a beginner friendly outline and resource that I personally used to get into open source. While it mentions UpForGrabs and Code of Conduct like in Open Source Diversity, it also mentions platforms like CodeTriage and many other things that I believe can be vital in guiding beginners towards open source contributing. What do you think?

Set up group on Open Collective for donations? (sticker costs, domain, etc)

Maybe it would make sense for us to be on Open Collective? That way we can do funding for sticker printing, domain costs etc. We do that with Open Source Design and it works quite well: https://opencollective.com/opensourcedesign/ – what do you think?

On the application page at https://opencollective.com/opensource/apply they say that:

You'll need a GitHub account and a repository with over 100 stars.

So if we would like to be on there we should get people to star this repository. :)

Also cc @piamancini from Open Collective – is the 100 stars a hard requirement? We have almost 500 Twitter followers ;) https://twitter.com/osdiversity

Modernize Continuous Integration pipeline

There are no checks or CI pipelines to test new contributions and preview new builds of the site. This would enable contributing with more confidence. Newcomers can know that their contributions are validated and working, and maintainers can quickly know this too without having to clone the changes locally and test things out.

Two tools I would like to use for this are Circle CI and Netlify for preview deployments in Pull Requests.

Criteria for adding projects / About page with other related projects

A start at an attempt of what our criteria for selecting projects is. :) This could be the start of an "About" page.

Our short description is: For more diversity & inclusion in free & open source software communities 😊

There are a lot of other lists already about general tech diversity initiatives:

What do you think @camilasan @jonatoni @sleepypioneer @emmairwin @Incabell @sara-02 everyone? :)

Adding a "Consulting" category

A very useful addition to the site would probably be a "Consulting" category where projects can find more resources or actually hire a consultant to work. Loosely defined the category would be:

  • People who regularly write articles specific to diversity & inclusion in free & open source
  • People who projects or companies can hire to improve in that area

Possible candidates to link there are:

Does this category make sense, should it be named differently, and who is missing? What do you think @camilasan @jonatoni @emmairwin @sleepypioneer @evalica @Incabell everyone :)

sustainOSS - Invite / Travel Fund available.

Hi! We are organizing the second edition of sustainOSS in London on the 25th of October.

I'd like to make sure this community gets enough time to buy tickets and/or apply to travel fund to attend. Travel fund closes next week!

Also, if you are connected with networks of sustainers/ maintainers that are not normally voices in the open source sustainability conversations, could you please share them with me? We specially want to include them in sustain! (you can find me pia at opencollective dot com)

We are brining people in from Nigeria, South Africa, India, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Thanks <3

Add Google Summer of Code to the programs section on the website

I know that the list focusses on SOC programs for women and other underrepresented sections in software development but the number of girls selected for Google Summer of Code has been increasing over the years and I think more girls should know about such a program.

Javascript dependencies out of date

It seems your javascript dependencies are out of date.
This is of course not recommended ;)

@skjnldsv can maybe help as my js package manage skills are not sufficient.
After that you could setup automatic dependency management.

Check accessability

Should check through site for accessability, this ranges from correct alt="" in images but also some formatting. This can be checked with google chrome audits in the developer tools. (See image)

Migrate site to React-based framework, like Docusaurus

Summary

Convert the existing website (plain HTML page) into a React-based site focused on content management, such as Docusaurus

Background

When the opensourcediversity.org website was first created, we were a smaller project with a group of people that also had in-person meet-ups to work on things like the website. Fast forward a few years and add a global pandemic in, and our site is tough to maintain in its current form.

Since there is a lot of interest in the site, and we have not made significant content changes in some time, now is a good opportunity to evaluate what we want to do. There are two goals in making a big change like this:

  1. Exciting web technologies: Use a web framework or tool that has some popularity, in the hope of getting more people involved who want to learn more about that kind of technology.
  2. Content management: Improve ease of maintenance for the resources, suggestions, and referrals we share on our website. Split up content so it is not maintained in one long HTML file.

Details

There are two sub-components to this mini-project:

Exciting web technologies

React is a popular front-end tool used in many communities, and Docusaurus is a React-based documentation tool written with close integration to upstream React. There are opportunities for us to figure out style and branding designs not only for this website, but any other websites we would want to build or host in the future.

Content management

Once the content is divided into smaller files that are easier to maintain, we can begin more active curation and review of what content is on our site. Are some resources outdated? Should we remove them? Are there new sections or new resources we can add? Where do they go?

We will need a small group of folks with an interest in this work to help out. Think of it like a librarian sort of task? πŸ‘€

Outcome

opensourcediversity.org is easier to contribute to, and it is easier for us to create and maintain a resource for and by the community

Organising Open Source Day monthly as a active solution for getting more woman in open source

Hey folks: Highlighting, as more and more I get involved w/ open source, I find less and no woman as active contributor or maintainer of open source projects. Just spreading the word for organising OpenSourceDay where people will work with mentor for contributing in open source projects, meaning target open source projects based on folks interest and make them work w/ active contributors. Once encouraged and liked folks would stick. Much more practical solution than writing and reading and publishing diversity articles. Few organisations I observed and I didn't find any woman or active woman contributor -

  • GNOME
  • Spinx
  • ReadTheDocs
  • Numpy
  • GENN
  • Scipy
  • Sympy
  • InternetArchive
  • PostMan
  • TheBlueBrain
  • OdlGroup
  • GoogleChrome
  • QubesOS
  • Cassandra
  • LLVM
  • GNU
  • Git
  • GCC
  • Gerrit

We are also publishing a research based website where most contributed, having most users open source org and open source projects can find the numbers publicly accessible.

Please see - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diversity_in_open-source_software.

Lemme know if you would be interested in supporting and running open source day every month. Let's retain women in open source!
