Current parser is fairly outdated and limited in scope, and should be replaced with something that fits these requirements:

• Uses CSL
• Uses JSON (Bibtex-support can be patched in)
• Allows various sorting and group
• Uses Markdown Extra footnotes for displaying citations in the order they are used in text

The vast majority of PHP implementations of bibliographies or citations are either outdated, poorly implemented, or unnecessarily heavy in features. The best PHP-alternative currently is citeproc-php, but the implementation is currently unclear. As it shares a lot of concepts and methodologies with citeproc-js, which has better documentation and demos, it should still be possible to use.
