What objects are stored in the dictionary? What error is being printed in the assertion?

Correct, there was a CFNull entry and that invalidates the Property list. Thanks.

Might be better if it handled this more gracefully, e.g, by stripping nulls before saving. I'll think about it.

This is fixed in 1.5. It will now strip NSNulls from saved plists, but also by default iOS will use NSCoding if the data isn't property list compatible.
