Currently there's no margin defined for the Gtk3 popup window, and the file popup_window-gtk3.xml is over-complicated and filled with unused stuff inherited from the Gtk2 version.
I reworked that a little bit with Glade too make it looks nicer. Attached a screenshot before modifications, and another after modifications.
If it looks OK to you, can I commit that ?
Preferences -> View -> Icon Theme
The ComboBox displays nothing when I click it. Only happens in Gtk3 version.
It feels awkward having the popup window covering the panel. This affects both gtk2 and gtk3. I got around this by removing <property name="type">popup</property>
from their xml files. Doing this does not give me any errors in the terminal for either gtk2 or gtk3.
After upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 I got such error:
"Unable to load icon stock_volume-mute: Icon 'stock_volume-mute' not present in theme"
"Unable to load icon gtk-execute: Icon 'gtk-execute' not present in theme"
Due to an issue with automake 1.13.1 pnmixer won't comile on arch64.
Although the tarballs for download end in tar.gz, they are not gzip files but only tar'ed.
$ file pnmixer-0.4.tar.gz
pnmixer-0.4.tar.gz: POSIX tar archive (GNU)
The width of the volume control window can become extremely big.
This can be caused by other windows with long titles, because pnmixer doesn't truncate any of them.
I am using a floating tint2 bar and conky for the "bar"'s background. However, clicking on the systray icon, pnmixer instead prefers to go below the floating tint2 bar making it unusable.
Should it honor the tray location when it shows up its volume control window?
Please see images below:

I'm using PNMixer 0.5.1 on Debian Linux btw.
Hi,
unfortunately I wasn't aware of changes in pnmixer, that's why v0.4 comes with an incomplete German translation. Patch is based on the 0.4 release.

Some files from /po haven't to be tracked in Git:
POTFILES: Will be created at build time from POTFILES.in
de.gmo: Better use *.gmo to prevent you from putting all the (upcoming) translations here
pnmixer.pot: Shouldn't be tracked. Every translator is able to run "intltool-update --pot" to get an up-to-date translation template.
Patch: http://mariobl.fedorapeople.org/Patches/gitignore.diff
By the way, you should think about to publish the translation template anywhere (Launchpad, Transifex...) to get more translations.
Using Xubuntu 14.04 on a Intel laptop. Without pulseaudio muting/unmuting a single channel works normal. But when pulseaudio is installed:
This is a suppose pulseaudio bug which happens when muting a single channel through alsa. The bugs can be found at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/878986 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-utils/+bug/1026331.
One possible solution would be to mute/unmute through pulseaudio when it's installed instead of alsa?
@nicklan is there anything important left or should we just throw out a new release. People keep filing bugs against the 0.5 release which are long fixed.
pnmixer uses XKeycodeToKeysym from libX11, but libX11 is not linked explicitly. Thus the build will fail on various distributions such as Fedora >= 13:

I am using pnmixer with xmonad and (issue is on both) stalonetray / trayer and tray is aligned to right.
When I click on icon a window with volume control is shown in a center of a screen.
It works fine when a tray is on left.
I guess window is aligned to icon and when there is no space it is placed in center.
It should always be placed next to icon or this is impossible to travel mouse to volume control without closing it earlier.
hi, i'm working on the italian translation.
when it is ready i'll upload it here

Sorry for the noise, but I've another issue. Just downloaded the tarball for 0.3, and there is the following line in src/main.c:
title_label = gtk_label_new (_("<span font_size=\"x-large\" font_weight=\"bold\">PNMixer 0.2</span>"));
Means, the "About" window references the wrong (previous) version here. I've no idea about programming, but shouldn't be a convenient way anywhere to fetch this value from a global variable? I know from most translations, a string such as "Myapp %s" appears in the pot template.
Hello! I installed the dependencies in Lubuntu 14.04 and when I compiled this successfully it gives me this: *** Error in `./pnmixer': free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x08e2cd98 ***
Aborted (core dumped)
Any Ideas? Thanks
due commit pull #23 i got that:
with this i cannot use the install procedure, due this error:
/bin/bash: ../mkinstalldirs: no such file or directory
It would be convenient to increment or decrement the volume by clicking on the +/- buttons that already exists.
If you click on the pnmixer icon and click mutes, it mutes audio as expected. But clicking to unmute does not unmute the audio. The icon changes to the "unmuted" status, but there is still no sound.
To unmute I have to open pavucontrol and unmute it from there on the output tab.
I'm running pnmixer 0.5.1 on arch linux with XFCE.
Hi,
Is this still in active development? If so, are there plans to support gtk3? Hopefully there shouldn't be much needs changing with it being not really a "GUI" oriented program!
Thanks.
pnmixer-git with 3.5.6-1-ARCH, fluxbox, tint2, cairo-compmgr. Left clicking opens the abbreviated volume control underneath tint2, rather than right above. Opens pavucontrol right above tint like it should.
pnmixer freezes when I try to open sound or application settings.
Version: 0.4, compiled from source
Hi,
My setup: Gentoo + Openbox + Trayer-srg.
Launching 'pnmixer' either manually or by using Openbox autostart file does launches the program but there is no icon in tray.
It is also possible to click on certain pixel(s) and get pnmixer menu and volume rocker.
I collected strace if needed.
The volume control tray application is fantastic, I'm using it with the XFCE desktop environment. A simple enhancement request is to add support for openning the xfce4-mixer application from the "Volume Control" menu option in the right-click tray menu.
2. When double clicking the volume slider knob it again closes the popup window and the volume now is still beeing held so next time when you open the popup window, the volume changes to the volume value which is parallel to the mouse cursor. Probably related to #73
When I build a pnmixer rpm, I export our global optimization flags before the build:
CFLAGS='-O2 -g -pipe -Wall -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fexceptions -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -m64 -mtune=generic'
export CFLAGS
CXXFLAGS='-O2 -g -pipe -Wall -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fexceptions -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -m64 -mtune=generic'
export CXXFLAGS
FFLAGS='-O2 -g -pipe -Wall -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fexceptions -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -m64 -mtune=generic -I/usr/lib64/gfortran/modules'
export FFLAGS
Nevertheless they are not added to the compiler flags:
make[2]: Entering directory `/home/chris/linux/fedora/pkgs/pnmixer/pnmixer-0.5.1/src'
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I.. -DPACKAGE_DATA_DIR=""/usr/share"" -DPACKAGE_LOCALE_DIR=""/usr/share/locale"" -pthread -I/usr/include/gtk-2.0 -I/usr/lib64/gtk-2.0/include -I/usr/include/atk-1.0 -I/usr/include/cairo -I/usr/include/gdk-pixbuf-2.0 -I/usr/include/pango-1.0 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib64/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/include/pixman-1 -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/include/libpng12 -I/usr/include/alsa -O2 -export-dynamic -c support.c
This used to work fine in 0.3.x
the xml files have been renamed
When pnmixer is running while it PA crashes it asks me to reinitialize the connection to alsa, if either then or already at startup PA isn't available this happens (PA is not running):

When running the "Volume Control Command" pnmixer leaves the process in a zombie state.
At the moment in gtk2 popup window I cannot just click on a selected value and expect the slider to change to that value but instead it increases/decreases by 10% (continuously if I hold).
I did found out that on Manjaro 0.8.11 Openbox edition doesn't have this problem.
I looked at PKGBUILD for their pnmixer and they are using an unmodified version 0.5.1 from https://github.com/downloads/nicklan/pnmixer/pnmixer-0.5.1.tar.gz using gtk2. However I did discovered that it's because of their Menda theme. When I changed to another theme then the slider wasn't "fixed" anymore, just like in 1st gif.
I'm not sure what they did with their Menda theme to make it better, which can be found at https://github.com/manjaro/artwork-menda.
When selecting an icon theme in pnmixer settings, pnmixer is going to look for volume icons named:
pnmixer-high
pnmixer-medium
pnmixer-low
pnmixer-muted
But because most of the themes have volume icons named:
audio-volume-high
audio-volume-medium
audio-volume-low
audio-volume-muted
, pnmixer will fall back to default theme.
Can't it search like this: Search for pnmixer-* icons, if they aren't there, search for audio-volume-* icons. Else, fallback to default icons?
EDIT: I see that it does this in main.c, but for some reason it fails. After symlinking the audio-volume-* icons to pnmixer-*, correct icons started displaying.
Here are two small fixes for the desktop file:

"No such file or directory" error with the command set to: urxvt -e alsamixer
If I put that exact same line in a text file (no spaces in the name) and mark it as executable, it starts OK
How do you guys think about that? Waste of time? I'm specifically thinking about doxygen-style function documentation.
It would be nice to have a setting to change the timeout for notifications, so they don't sit around for the default length. Since usually the volume notification is just a quick reminder of what the volume level is, a short timeout, like 1-3 seconds would be nice.
I tested the possibility by editing src/notify.c
and adding notify_notification_set_timeout(notification,1500);
after the creation of the notification
variable, and this works.
On the wiki it's said that pnmixer supports alsa and pulseaudio, I'm using pulseaudio for sound but I can't build without alsa it seems:
checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... /bin/grep
checking for egrep... /bin/grep -E
checking for ANSI C header files... yes
checking for alsasound ... no
configure: error: alsa not found
I can install with yum the pnmixer and it works, but I wanted this latest version.
<property name="type">popup</property>
from popup_window-gtk2.xml before compiling which did the job.Hey there, when I adjust the volume to more than 100% pnmixer just segfaults:

The current Git content has a file named COPYING which references the GPLv3. But the source files callbacks.c and callbacks.h are marked as licensed under GPLv2, and the other files don't include any license hints. The problem came up during a package review for Fedora [1]. You should decide if you want to use either GPLv2 or GPLv3, with or without upwards compatibility with future versions of the license (in the latter case).
..at all! Are there any hidden dependencies for it to recognise them? I use openbox as a WM. I started off with them set to the XF86Audio_____ keys, which did nothing. I then tried a simple Win+X key shortcut - same result.
Nothing output on terminal, no error message, just nothing :(
(key bindings work fine with all other software I have: openbox, xbindkeys, readline/bash, etc)
