Android-Root-Coverage-Plugin

Automatically configures Jacoco code coverage tasks for both combined and per module coverage reports.

Configuring Jacoco for Android projects is unfortunately not always easy. It is very common to find multi-module Android projects where one module has tests for code found in another module, for example integration/UI tests that cover code in multiple other modules. Configuring Jacoco for such a case is not always straight forward, you need to point Jacoco to the right sources, execution data and class files, not to mention how error prone manual Jacoco setups can be. This plugin automatically configures Jacoco for you, so you don't have to.

Feature highlights:

  • Include unit-tests, instrumented unit-tests or both in the final reports
  • Support for combined coverage reports (code in module X is covered when touched by tests from any other module)
  • Support for coverage reports per module (code in module X is only covered when touched by tests from module X)
  • Custom package/class filters
  • Support for mixed build-types

1. Setup

Apply the plugin to your top-level (root project) build.gradle file using one of the following methods:

2. How to use

  1. Enable running tests with code coverage This is required so that code will be instrumented, but also to tell this plugin to include modules that have at least one of these properties enabled in the final report (or individual reports)

    Only Android modules (com.android.application or com.android.library) are supported, this plugin will not execute tests and generate coverage reports for non-android modules. Also keep in mind that by default this plugin is configured to create reports for the debug variant, so coverage must be enabled for the debug variant, unless you change this (Configuration).

  2. Run one of the automatically configured Gradle tasks to generate a Jacoco report:

    • For combined coverage: ./gradlew :rootCoverageReport
    • For module specific coverage (all modules): ./gradlew coverageReport
    • For module specific coverage (single module): ./gradlew :yourModule:coverageReport

    Resulting reports can be found in /build/reports/ and yourModule/build/reports/

  3. Optionally configure the plugin to change the output types, test variants and more, see Configuration.

3. Configuration

By default the plugin generates code coverage reports using the build variant debug for every module. However in some cases different build variants per module might be required, especially if there is no debug build variant available. In those cases you can configure custom build variants for specific modules:

Note 1: AGP 8.3.0 and Gradle 8.3

The Android developers website claims AGP 8.3 requires Gradle version 8.3 as a minimum, however from at least alpha release 11 this seems to instead be Gradle version 8.4!

Note 2: AGP 8.0-8.3.0-alpha04

Android Gradle Plugin version 8.0 till 8.3.0-alpha04 suffered from a bug that made it impossible (by normal means) to get access to non-instrumented class files, this bug lasted for a long time and was only fixed in 8.3.0-alpha05. This means there is no stable working plugin version available for these AGP versions.

Note 3: AGP 7.0-7.2.0-alpha05

Android Gradle Plugin version 7 till 7.2.0-alpha05 suffered from a bug that caused instrumented coverage in Android library modules to fail, this has only been fixed in Android Gradle Plugin 7.2.0-alpha06. This means there is no stable working plugin version available for these AGP versions.

Note 4: group ID change & Maven Central

Plugin versions below 1.3.1, such as 1.3.0, are only available on the Gradle Plugin Portal (maven { url "https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/"}) and not on Maven Central. These versions use the group ID org.neotech.plugin and plugin ID org.neotech.plugin.rootcoverage!

Note 5: AGP versions before 3.4.0-alpha05

Android Gradle Plugin versions before 3.4.0-alpha05 are affected by a bug that in certain conditions can cause Jacoco instrumentation to fail in combination with inline kotlin methods shared across modules. For more information see: issue #109771903 and issue #110763361. If your project is affected by this upgrade to an Android Gradle Plugin version of at least 3.4.0-alpha05.

4. Bintray/JCenter shutdown

Due to the shutdown of Bintray/JCenter the Android-Root-Coverage-Plugin has been migrated to Sonatype's Maven Central repository. Unfortunately this also meant that the group ID used by the Android-Root-Coverage-Plugin had to be changed from org.neotech.plugin to nl.neotech.plugin. The plugin ID has also changed from org.neotech.plugin.rootcoverage to nl.neotech.plugin.rootcoverage.

JCenter is supposed to stay available as read-only repository, however it is probably better to migrate to the Gradle Plugin Portal, since all version of this plugin are also available there:

Version 1.3.0 has been re-released (as 1.3.1) with the new group ID and plugin ID to Maven Central and the Gradle Plugin Portal. Upcoming versions will also be released to Maven Central and the Gradle Plugin Portal. Check the setup section on how to use this plugin with the updated group ID and plugin ID.

5. Development

Want to contribute? Great! Just clone the repo, code away and create a pull-request. Try to keep changes small and make sure to follow the code-style as found in the rest of the project.

How to test your changes/additions? The plugin comes with an integration test and unit tests. You can run these tests either by executing ./gradlew clean test or run the test directly from Android Studio (or IntelliJ IDEA).

rootCoverage is unresolved for kts gradle

I am trying to integrate in kotlin based project but unfortunately plugin is not showing up in gradle tasks.

How am I integrating?

Is there anything that I am missing?

Not all coverage files (`*.ec`) included in the JacocoReport when using `clearPackageData`

Our project is setup in a way that outputs seperate .ec files per test. I believe this is due to the clearPackageData option being set to true, which is desired for us since it helps with test indempotence.

The issue is that the plugin is only looking for coverage.ec files when I need it to be looking for *.ec files.

The issue has been discussed here but I'm making a new issue since I'm not convinced that PR is trying to solve the same thing.

The code coverage from RobolectricTestRunner unit test code is not honored.

First of all, thank you for making the effort writing this gradle library to generate the code coverage. After exploring an ocean of blogs, github sample, code snippet, etc for the past three days, I finally come across this repository, the best one and the most potential one that is to rule the world of unified code coverage report. All of other repositories carry all kind of issues, such as out-of-date gradle config, verbose configuration for every module, etc. Only this one gets things done at the most sensible way. So thank you, again. I would never imagine that it has been so challenging to get multiple code coverage report generated.

I have been conducting test with this library. Other than the known issues that you mentioned in the README, I am reporting a new issue. It seems that the code coverage from RobolectricTestRunner unit test code is not honored. You could reproduce this issue from this code sample project. Basically, I just copied the code from your multi-module and added an unit test run by RobolectricTestRunner. From the Android Studio Code Coverage report, it says the code is unit test coveraged. But the generated one from rootCodeCoverageReport says the otherwise.

Would you please confirm this issue ?

Unresolved reference BuildConfig when upgrading to 1.5.0

Hi, I've been using this library using AGP 4 and Root Coverage Plugin 1.4.0. But after I update the AGP and kotlin version to this version (see version below) I got an error that said Unresolved reference: BuildConfig. The unresolved BuildConfig causes an error when I generate jacoco report or assembleDebug the app. Fyi I saved the value of BuildConfigField at shared gradle and apply it to each module, is that affect this issue?. Also, when I downgrade to 1.4.0 the error is gone, generating a report is successful but causes [ant:jacocoReport] Execution data for class 'xxx' does not match.

Misleading warning

Super thank you for the work under the plugin.

We have next project structure:

root 
   features 
      registration
      fit
      ...
  core
     network
     ...
  app

We are getting warning that projects features and core are not supported. However, they are not projects but just container folders.

Can you add configuration for ignore modules in `rootCoverage` block

I understand we can disable coverage for any module with android.debug.testCoverageEnabled true. However, it seems manually if there are too many modules.

Could you consider adding new field to rootCoverage block:

(the ignoredModules will prevent coverage script to execute in these modules, even it has testCoverageEnabled true).

Error when updating to AGP 8.0.0 and gradle 8.0

I tried to update our project to AGP 8.0.0 and gradle to 8.0 and got this error that looks like it comes from the root coverage plugin.

Code Coverage not reported for instrumented tests (Android library module) on AGP 7.0

Potential documentation caveat

Hi Rolf, thank you for having addressed #37. I did not make full validation until recently and I found out that even if we upgrade the library to version 1.4.0 with includeNoLocationClasses true, it is still required to include apply plugin: 'jacoco' at the application module level to make robolectric unit test code coverage credited to the final report. Otherwise, it will still be ignored.

Please refer to this pull request with the decreased result as an example to demonstrate my statement.

The easy fix could be adding extra call out on README.md stating that apply plugin: 'jacoco' is needed. But I am not sure whether we could have it addressed at the library level to avoid such extra configuration.

JaCoCo class mismatch when running together with Firebase Perf plugin

Hi @Rolf-Smit, after trying to upgrade the root coverage plugin 1.5.1 it works perfectly. But after I check again the report, one of unit test inside the app module isn't covered but the other modules are covered correctly. When I run the command I have an error like this

For your information,

  1. I was already set testCoverageEnabled as true and running the command at the correct build type
  2. I was already searching this issue at stackoverflow, and the cause is about a different JAVA version or using a different Gradle. The question is, It's okay if compileOptions in my project is different from the actual java version I used? Because, I've used this setup (compileOptions and java version) before, and running well.
  3. I was already upgraded and downgraded the jacoco too, from existing 0.8.6 > 0.8.7 > 0.8.8 but still not covered.

Whatever task I try to run, I get this message:

I only have unit tests, so I disabled androidTests. The report is generated, but the coverage is all 0%. I'm in Gradle 7.3.3, AGP 7.1.3, and plugin 1.5.3. My project is a mix of java and kotlin. (src/main/java and src/main/kotlin)

Run coverageReport failed when not set managedDevices

On release 1.7.0, following check will cause test failed when not set testOptions.managedDevices in project's build.gradle. allDevices*AndroidTest and connected*AndroidTest will not be generated when not set this option.

Support for pure Java or Kotlin library modules

I am trying to understand whether pure Java library modules and pure Kotlin library modules are supported.
In the README I found this statement:

Only Android modules (com.android.application or com.android.library) are supported, this plugin will not execute tests and generate coverage reports for non-android modules.

Test coverage verification

Is there an easy way to verify code coverage results produced by the plugin against a threshold? I want to set up a CI job that will perform this verification and fail if the results are below the threshold. I noticed that JaCoCo provides jacocoTestCoverageVerification, but I'm unsure how to integrate it within the context of this plugin.

Add seperate gradle tasks for creating per module coverage reports

Currently only full aggregated code coverage reports can be created, it would be nice to also have the option to create per module coverage reports.

  • Configure Gradle tasks to create per module code coverage reports
  • Optional: allow to configure which test types should be included per module (test & androidTest)

Source files not accessible in JaCoCo HTML reports

Since version plugin version 1.5.1 JaCoCo HTML reports no longer seem to contain source files. This does not break code coverage in general but makes the reports less useful if you want to see which line was covered and which was not.

In order to understand which properties I need to apply to a given project I would love to see for each property which default value it comes with, like it is pointed out for generateHtml.

Error when compile on Windows

Context

  • Plugins version 1.5.2
  • Windows 11
  • Android studio Chipmunks
  • Gradle version 7.2.1
  • Project multi module

Great job for this plugin!
I have an error when I try to sync Gradle.
My IDE can't compile and return this error, it works in my github actions and works on MAC but not on my Windows machine. If i remove your plugins, it's works.

Possible solution

Maybe at the line 168 of RootCoveragePlugin.kt, you remove suffixe ":" too late.
Replace
val path = project.relativePath(subProject.path).removeSuffix(":")
by
val path = project.relativePath(subProject.path.removeSuffix(":"))
