hashword.pl always continues as if "short" was selected

For some reason, the script acknowledges every aspect of the code, yet does not seem to accept "long" as an input, nor does it die when a non-optional parameter is given.

Example:

josh@harbinger:$ perl /home/josh/Documents/hashword/hashword.pl
Would you like short or long?
short

As you can imagine, this is a considerable issue, being it cripples half of the functionality.

I had it working, however it seemed to cause a regression in other areas mangled terminal output.
