javaunixfilestat's Introduction

FileStat - A Java interface for picking up detailed file information
under Linux/Unix. It really collects every bit of information there is.

The package is offered without restrictions on its use, but also WITHOUT
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. Care has been taken to ensure the enclosed
software works correctly, but bugs may remain. Feedback, incuding
problem reports, is welcome.

The interface uses native code to call 'stat(2)' and 'lstat(2)'. This
means you have to compile the package on your box to make it work. You
must have gcc (or some other C compiler) and preferably make.

In the best of worlds, 'make' or 'make all' is the only command you
have to run. This is not a very streamlined package, so be prepared for
one or two bumps on the road.

After successful compilation, copy or symlink 'filestat.so' to one of
the directories in the Java property 'java.library.path'. Then test
the package by running the following command on one or more sample
file paths:

java -jar lib/filestat.jar <file path 1> <file path 2> ...

Java classes:

se.soderstrom.linux.FileStat
The class to import and use from Java code. See the comments in the
   source code.

se.soderstrom.linux.SyscallException
Exception thrown by methods in the FileStat class if the OS does not
allow you to get file information. Among other things it contains
   the good old errno.

se.soderstrom.linux.TestFileStat
A class for testing FileStat. Also the class invoked if you run
'java -jar' on filestat.jar. The main program expects one or more
file paths to examine. It picks up and prints full information about
those files. Then it runs the 'stat' Linux/Unix command. This allows
you to check that the Java class really got it right.
