mate-desktop ============= mate-desktop contains the libmate-desktop library, the mate-about program as well as some desktop-wide documents. The libmate-desktop library provides API shared by several applications on the desktop, but that cannot live in the platform for various reasons. There is no API or ABI guarantee, although we are doing our best to provide stability. Documentation for the API is available with gtk-doc. The mate-about program helps find which version of MATE is installed. You may download updates to the package from: http://pub.mate-desktop.org/releases/ Installation ============ If you are not using a released version of mate-desktop (for example, if you checked out the code from git), you first need to run './autogen.sh'. How to report bugs ================== Bugs should be reported to the MATE bug tracking system: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-desktop/issues
I am an user of Debian sid (aptosid distro, being more accurate) and I'm using mate about two months. In this time, I've did dist-upgrade many times without problems. Today I tried again to do dist-upgrade, but failed.

This last log gives, I think, the clue:
'/usr/share/omf/gpl/gpl-sv.omf', which is also in package mate-desktop-gnome 1.2.0-1+wheezy
which conflicts with gnome-desktop3-data
Any idea?
I'll be at your disposal if you need more data. And congratulations for the excellent mate-desktop.

Edit:
I am not sure if this is the correct place for this problem. Please, feel free to change to another one if not.
The problem is worse than not being able to do d-u. At the boot MATE and its siblings: xfce, lxde... show many errors and they (I have tried all) cannot display the wallpaper nor any icon. Besides that, there are some programs (pluma and mousepad among others) that crash immediately. Some others, like iceweasel, crash also very often. These problems do the system unusable.
Thanks for your attention.

Are there any chances to see this http://chad.glendenin.com/metacity/patch.html window-pacement patch applied?

Using Compiz in both these distros, it simply breaks all window borders. I'm unable to use Compiz on Mate
Hello Mate world, I believe the people who maintain Cairo dock and I have found a bug. I use Cairo dock 3.2.1 in Debian Wheezy with Mate 1.6.0 and I was having issues accessing my applications through their applet, but not through the Mate panel. Here is the fourm:
http://glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=6971
and here are the specifications:
https://developer.gnome.org/menu-spec/#paths
We have come to the conclusion that the $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS doesn't contain '/etc/xdg' and $XDG_MENU_PREFIX 'mate-' . For a workaround I added these two commands in the ~/.profile file:
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=mate-
If this is in the wrong place please point me in the right direction for I am still very new to Linux and this website is too confusing for reporting a bug, no disrespect; just a little input. Thank you for your time and help.
I've noticed that when I delete a file from a USB disk (NTFS or FAT32 filesystem, I've not tried on Linux fs...), the file is deleted but the trash can is still empty. The file remain on the media until you remove it, at this point a popup message ask to effective delete the files.
Technical details:
SO: Debian testing, last update.
DM: Mate, last update from official repo.
Other DM: LXDE.
FreeBSD is currently using GNOME 2 which is fine I guess, but sooner or later they're going to move to GNOME3. Compiling Gnome, etc from the -meta package is very easy, simply
cd /usr/ports/x11/gnome2; make install clean
and FreeBSD will compile and install each and every dependency for gnome.. the user is provided with dialogs to choose what features to install, so I would use:
portinstall -cvf x11/gnome2
where the c flag tells portinstall to run the config dialogs first, THEN goto the compiling. This is the nature of FreeBSD Ports, think of Ports as a poorly named Source Based Package Management System. that kicks a whole lotta ass.
So by now you're probably thinking, "WTF does this have anything to do with MATE??" Well, everything!! MATE is a fork of Gnome 2, and since gnome 2 builds so easily, MATE will also build this easily... By simply MATEifying the directions found here: http://is.gd/JCSVwo FreeBSD Documentation is the best there is, which is why it is so awesome, here's their overall Porter's Guide to get you up to speed with Ports and sharing your port on the most excellent OS: FreeBSD.
As with the GNOME 2 ports, I do not forsee any real problem building mate on FreeBSD, and all you really need to provide are a few text files and a Makefile (A FreeBSD Ports Makefile ;)). And submit it for review.
The installation instructions on http://mate-desktop.org/install/#archlinux refer to a package mate-desktop-environment which does not exist.
I don't really know where I should report this, it might be a Linux Mint-specific misconfiguration too.
The thing that bugs me is that I want Luakit to be the default browser instead of Firefox, and I can just say that it was quite hard to achieve that using the usual configuration utilities.
I managed to get gnome-open to respect that I want to use Luakit instead, but it still was a bit random wether a link in an application would open in Luakit or Firefox. XChat for example uses xdg-open instead of gnome-open.
I've solved this with a quite ugly hack, I opened /usr/bin/xdg-open
and changed detectDE()’ on line 304 to just contain “DE=gnome” which makes it redirect its responibility.
Best would be if $GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID contained some sensible data, but I do not know in which file it would be best to set that value.
Hope I got all neccisary information,
and thank you for you great work on this project!
E: /home/attila/Nyilvános/ubk/2.2/MATE/mate-desktop_1.5.7-1.5_i386.ubk.uhu: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/omf/fdl/fdl-C.omf', which is also in package gnome-desktop 0:3.4.2-1.2
Not sure if this is the right area to report it, but I'm locking down MATE for use on public computers, and setting /desktop/mate/lockdown/disable_command_line in mateconf-editor has no effect on someone right-clicking the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal".
I use Mate 1.4.0 and Parcellite 1.0.2rc5 (a clipboard manager). Parcellite adds itself to the session startup by creating "~/.config/autostart/parcellite-startup.desktop". But it does not start in Mate.
This desktop file contains the line "OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE" and if this line is altered to "OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;MATE" then parcellite starts as expected!
Since Mate is a fork of Gnome 2 it could be wise to accept 'MATE' and 'GNOME', and also start apps with "OnlyShowIn=GNOME". Please comment if you agree. If not I will try file a bug to Parcellite directly.
This only happens to me on two different computers using Mint Maya Mate 32 bit NOT Cinnamon. After I pick the Tutorials button located under the Support category within the Welcome Screen, the Welcome screen won't close. And it stays on top so I can't do anything else but log off.

In other shells such as Unity and Cinnamon, pressing alt-` (the button to the left of 1) enables the user to switch between windows of the same application, whereas alt-tab is for switching between applications. However, there seems to be no such functionality in Mate.
When I was randomly browsing the code in mate-about.c I started to think, "Why should christmas be the only one listed?"
So what about listing other holidays such as Valentines day, Halloween, and other major internationally recognized Holidays?
Example of how the coding would work based off the existing coding for Christmas.

This is simply something I thought that might add a bit of variety to MATE.
If this idea is accepted then I'll get to work on making the logos in compliance with size restrictions.
I cannot find any way to switch to 1KB = 1024B, rather than 1KB = 1000B.
I would creately appreciate an option for this, as 1KB=1000B is very confusing
and is not the standard used by programs, only by manifactures.

2010-11-23 rr: add api for ensuring a primary display is set in config

I have noted some problems with thumbnail generation. The process that generates thumbnails appears to crash when it encounters an .odp file created by LibreOffice.
I have a folder where thumbnails were generated for files before the odp file but not after. I deleted the .odp file, then logged out and logged in -- thumbnails were generated for the remaining files.
I would be happy to collect some additional data if someone can tell me how to do it.
Compiz works really well in MATE. But there is a problem, not replace Marco.
The command . Compiz does work very well but Marco is still active.
Error:
Window manager warning: Window 0 in the display “: 0.0″ already has a window manager, try using the “– replace” to replace the active window manager.
This makes the system resources increase significantly.
A momentary solution is to add the initiation Applications under the command: killall marco. This seems to work pretty well. But of course this is not the ideal solution.
Solved!
sorry, same shit as mate-doc-utils

In my rpms in fedora i used following patches taken from gnome-desktop-2.32.0-9.fc16 spec .
Upstream fixes was send to gnome git, but aren't in mate.
Patch0: 0001-bgo-629168-Don-t-read-past-the-end-of-a-string-mate.patch
Patch1: 0001-Fix-possible-double-free-when-destroying-private-win.patch

Can anyone pls estimate if they are useful for Mate?
Like nonsense/ useful / nice to have .
Thank you
Hello, mate is working well to me, except the Network Proxy application, which doesn't have the "Apply the configuration for the entire system" button, this button was present on the Gnome2, and worked well.
In mate, I can't use the proxy on the command line.
Music control keys on Logitech Media Keyboard doesnt work in Banshee. Everything is perfect under Unity and Gnome, but not on Mate. Mute is working but u can
t unmute. I have no idea what is going on.
When I watch something on VLC, changing the application volume causes also the master volume modification. This is very annoying, because if you pull down the master volume and pull up VLC volume, them gain the same volume!
When I compile upower I see this message : no package gudev-1.0 found.
And when I try to compile libunique I get this message : Could not find include 'gtk-2.0.gir'

Just installed Min 15/Olivia on a Lenovo T60 and applied updates available as of today. Upon login, the system is so sluggish as to be unusable. top shows the 'cinnamon' process has pegged CPU (half of it anyway, is a Core 2)
I have Mint 13 Nadia on another partition on the same machine and it's always worked great. Please advise how I can provide additional diagnostics. I can also make the machine available in our DMZ for benefit of any developers who would like to login and debug.

if it worked anything like javascript objects you should be able to test if session.mate instead of calling session.mate.something but that is only the start of the coding...
i know it is not session.mate but i have 12.04 on a separate hdd than my 10.04 install with my passwords saved on it so i could not copy/paste the terminal message
the reason for running mate-panel outside of a mate session is very simple i need compiz
ubuntu 12.04
login to unity
open ccsm (compizconfig-settings-manager) and a terminal
turn unity off in ccsm
run mate-panel in the terminal
results in panel that are customizable with compiz running!!!
but as i said above not all applets work without a mate session :(
of course if compiz were to work in mate the above would not matter to me
i dont mind contribution code but i dont think i know the right language for this
i know css, javascript, html, sql (enought to get by), and php
i can make a basic shell script
if you need any version info ask i will switch my hdd and get it
I think this would be a very nice feature to have. Being forced to have the same background on both monitors in a dual monitor setup is kind of annoying.

This problem has been occurring to me for a few versions of Mate now... For every maximized window there is a vertical bar visible at the left side on the screen:
http://cactuspie.eu/.mate/Screenshot.png
The problem appears not only on the Terminal, I'm just using it as an example. The bar is not visible when there are no maximized windows. Sometimes to make it appear the mouse cursor needs to be moved to the upper left corner of the screen first.
The color of the bar varies depending on the theme (white or black, possibly other colors), but it is always visible, regardless which theme I try to use (both gtk3 and gtk2 themes).
I know that it is NOT an intended behavior, because when I select the text on the terminal I get the following result:
http://cactuspie.eu/.mate/Screenshot-1.png
http://cactuspie.eu/.mate/Screenshot-2.png
The bar reappears fully after mouse gets close to the upper left corner of the screen though. The problem appears regardless of which graphics drivers I use (nouveau and proprietary).
Version of MATE: 1.6
Distribution: Linux Mint x64
Graphics card: EVGA Geforce GTX 560
ubuntu authentication service not working after last update - works ok with unity but not with Mate
The keyboard backlight doesn't work with the Fn-buttons.
When pressed, an icon which shows the current backlight-level but no effect on the light.
However, mate-power-manager manages to set the levels when idling, on AC, and on battery etc.
The keys are correctly found as xf86kbdbacklightdown and up.

The global application font and and the corresponding font size can be set with the "mate-appearance-properties" tool. But the Mate desktop and application like mate-terminal ignore the font size setting and use always a size of 10 or 11 pt, whereas the application font name setting is respected.
This issue has been seen with Mate 1.2 unter Linux Mint LMDE 201204. It becomes obvious, if a small font size like 8pt is chosen and e.g. a mate-terminal window and a gnome-terminal window is opened. The font size setting is respected by the menu of the gnome-terminal, but not by the menu of the mate-terminal.

MATE session is crashing due to a missing key (lock-enabled) in the org.mate.lockdown when I select 'System/Shutdown/Suspend'.
I'm not really sure if it's connected, but the system doesn't go hibernate, instead it crashes mate-session and goes back to GDM loosing everything from the session.
Fix please ? Any ideas why suspend/hibernate from button isn't working? (it works ok if I select suspend/hibernate when I close the lid).

http://i.imgur.com/N25mo.png - from gnome2 on ubuntu 10.04
this is what i expected from the applet
the one in mate (running ubuntu 12.04 64bit) does nothing when clicked
the applet gives the user over the core that the applet is monitoring
if you add a menu could you add a option to set all cores as [option](i imaging setting all in a i7 one by one gets old fast)
i don't know how the applet does it without root access
i know root sets it like this
echo -n ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
i think this would set all the same (code from /etc/init.d/ondemand)
for CPUFREQ in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
do
[ -f $CPUFREQ ] || continue
echo -n ondemand > $CPUFREQ
done
Hey guys, I've just installed Linux Mint15 MATE edition ;D Loving it!!! Only drama at the moment is, when I restart my desktop icons have their text missing from below them. To get them back I reset the theme... Even if I choose a new theme it does the same thing upon reboot.
Any ideas on how to fix this little hassle ?
Cheers!
Hi

I can only see an app's icon in the WS switcher little boxes, but not in the panel.
If I minimize an app, it disappears from the screen AND from the WS switcher box.
I can never restore it because there is no icon in the panel for me to click and
restore the app.

I'm having an issue installing MATE on Arch Linux. Basically, some stuff in Arh Linux depends on one thing, and Mate depends on another thing, and those two things are in conflict and cannot both be installed. My output when installing with pacman from the Arch [mate] repo looks like this:
┌─[3:50:23pm/starlancer/trusktr/~/Downloads]
└─╼ sudo pacman -Syu --ignoregroup mate archboot

Any tips on what to do?
Hello,
In order to compile 'mate-desktop' 1.5.4, installing package 'gnome-doc-utils' seems to be required. Otherwise 'make' will fail on 'xml2po' commands.
Please add this prerequisite to 'configure'.
Thank you,
Matt
When running gtk3 application in a Mate session, they appear very ugly due to the lack of themeing.

If I turn the volume down to 0% using the volume control keys, it sticks on mute until I manually (meaning with the cursor) take it above 0, after which I can control it using the keys again.
