There is an issue w/ Metal on 12.0, please upgrade your OS to the latest Monterey version to solve this issue. Thanks!

Semantic versioning does not go by dates. It goes by version numbers. When you say 11+ that means including 12, regardless of the release dates. I'm not sure what the hostility is for, this is feedback from one of your users that your messaging is confusing.

Thanks for blaming me though. Have a good one.

Nobody is incorrect here. My interpretation of your versioning was not aligned with yours, thats all. I assumed version requirements based on semantic versioning, your intention was release date. Thanks for updating the site and again, appreciate all your (and the other maintainers) work!

No problem! Have a good one Vinnie

May I suggest adding OS compatibility requirements to future patches? I tend not to update my OS if i can help it, barring security patches, as things tend to randomly break.

seathasky avatar seathasky commented on August 16, 2024

All requirements are already listed on the website https://www.xivmac.com/my-mac-supported

XIV on Mac requires macOS Big Sur 11.6.7+ but we recommend using the latest version of macOS Monterey or macOS Ventura.

If a patch is no longer backwards compatible and you know it, please communicate that! I could have fixed this on my own without getting maintainers involved.

How would you prefer us to better word the website to suit your needs?

vingiarrusso avatar vingiarrusso commented on August 16, 2024

Well, tbh, you seemed to know pretty quickly that 4.7 doesn't work on OS 12.0. If 4.7 is no longer compatible with <=12.0, that should be communicated appropriately because it is not accurate that XIV on Mac works with >=11.6.7.

If you listed in the patch notes on the website that upgrading the launcher requires a certain version of the OS, that would have been helpful. After the game no longer started, I immediately went to the website to ensure my OS was supported with this patch and found no indication to the contrary, leading me to open an issue.

The majority of our users don't stay 13 OS updates behind.

It is perfectly accurate that XIV on Mac works on 11.6.7. 11.6.7 is a newer release than 12.0. 12.0 was released in October 2021, and 11.6.7 June 2022.

I'm not going to entertain this conversation anymore. If you'd like to use XOM, update your OS like the website says. Thanks

No hostility at all. I just am not going to entertain someone having issues when our website already recommends to be on the latest release of Monterey.

Thats all fine. All I'm saying is that recommended !== required. If something is required, tell me. Don't blame me after the fact because my system fulfills your requirements.

I'm not obligated to do anything for you, so please check yourself.

We do value user feedback greatly, but not when it's demanded.

No one is blaming you. Simply stated to follow the websites recommendations.

We provide enough accurate information on our website based off our own testing. If something isn't working, probably best to take those recommendations. I apologize if it's not up to your standards.

(And no, I'm not being hostile, just stating the facts)

Hey, I completely understand where you are coming from. I'm keenly aware of the difficulty with the seemingly unlimited permutations that occur in the graph of dependencies related to open-source software and especially the dedication for a relatively thankless job that you do on your own time simply because you want to.

I accepted your answer immediately and took your recommendation. You asked for my feedback in how I'd like to see it presented on the website and I gave you that. We had a conversation and I can see why you may think I'm demanding something, but I'm not. You all do what you want and we'll be fine with that. I feel this was escalated with the language about not "entertaining" me but I have no real issue with any of this. I was just giving you a way that I've seen that can prevent this in the future, I have no expectation that OSS maintainers implement any suggestion by their users.

We are happy to accommodate our users. I even updated the website to appease you.

As far as my "entertaining you" comment, When a user starts stating wrong information;

If 4.7 is no longer compatible with <=12.0, that should be communicated appropriately because it is not accurate that XIV on Mac works with >=11.6.7.

I am left with little choice to do exactly that. I'd rather not argue with you.

Everything stated previously on the website was 100% accurate to a fault.

No, it did not include what YOU wanted as you stated, but I have now simplified so users like yourself can no longer hold us to ridiculous standards.

Have a great day!
