Smart meter, Smart modelling: A key aspect to quantify and assess the impact of photovoltaic (PV) systems on distribution networks in a realistic way is through the use of socio-economic data (energy consumption and national census data) to locate and size PV systems. However, analyses based on grid modeling are prone to errors due to their dependence on the availability and accuracy of system information. As an alternative to grid modeling for simulation, smart meter data can be used to compensate for latent inaccuracies due to lack of information. In the absence of comprehensive technical parameters to model the grid, model-free (metering) approaches are often a smart alternative and even more so when estimating the customer's PV hosting capacity as their implementation is independent of the available grid modeling information.
