Retina iMac Problem

Please see the attached files.
I'm only guessing this is a retina iMac issue,
because none of my other macs showing this symptom.

It works fine until I place it in the dock area.
What seems to be the issue here?

Missing details in "More Info" in finder information window

Finder "Info" does not give any additional information (see red rectangle in screenshot) if the file is stored on a network volume (see blue rectangle in screenshot).

No issues for files stored on a local drive.

My configuration : macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, Synology NAS (smb share), QLVideo 1.90

Metadata doesn't appear to be working on 10.13

I've been using this for a while, and it's awesome, but just thought I'd report that it appears to not be compatible with the latest OS update. I tried reinstalling the cask but it didn't seem to change anything. If I'm wrong, sorry for the report. I don't see any codec information in the info window though. Not dimensions either or anything else.

I'm using the new encrypted APFS.

This is confirmed to be an issue after doing brew cask reinstall qlvideo

Video not playable in quicklook

For .mp4 or .mov files, without QLVideo installed, they can be directly played without opening. However, after installing, it only shows a thumbnail and the file is not playable (unless use space to quicklook).

Game changer with libVLC on Mac?

Could this be implemented in some way to view all the VLC compatible video formats in Quick Look?

Or, if that's simply not possible, could an app be made to behave similar to Quick Look with libVLC?

For example, instead of triggering Quick Look, a different shortcut could trigger the video to open in a similar window via an app or process that's always running and exhibits the same behavior as Quick Look (or even better)? This would be incredible and I'm sure plenty of people aside from people who work with video would buy or donate for it. I know I would.

EDIT - I hunted around and see that you're already using libVLC I think, but it won't work with Quick Look for video. Could that change in the future with libVLC updates they're making today? Or, do you think my app idea may be the only alternative?

Set videos to "Mute" on default

Hi,
is it possible to set up QLVideo to preview/play all the videos muted?

Maybe a setting via Defaults Write, or on a Preferences page?

(This sound a bit odd, but sometimes the user (me) is listening to music and just want to review some videos with this fine program!)

(Big thank you for your work!!! Its makes fun again to browse my videos via finder!)

EDIT: hmm.. trying again to quickview some videos, it did not work anymore. Just thumbnails are shown (as written in the very long discussion here...). I'm pretty sure I previewed MKVs before....

No previews in search/smart folders

I am unsure whether or not this is by design, but while the files I am referring to(a bunch of .mkv) have previews if I navigate to their directory, they do not have previews in a search or in my smart folders.

console errors

I've noticed for a while that the console spits out strange errors during thumbnail creation, here are some (hopefully) descriptive sreenshots and some copied error messages. It only happens when I browse through directories with mkv files in them, browsing inside avi-only directories doesn't produce these error messages.

No MKV Thumbnails

After migrating from windows to my new Mac Pro, only one of the few things that's bothered me was the lack of native video support. This plugin is great (all I really needed was thumbnails, I really could care less about the QuickLook).

However, after installing and restarting Finder, to my sadness MKV is not supported. Are there plans to add support for this, or no?

This plugin is great, because I have thousands of MKV files and I'm just not in the mood to spend an entire week converting them.

-- On a side note, whoever reads this, what program is appropriate for converting MKV files into a native format on Mac, and which format is the best choice to ensure no loss of audio and video quality?

Cannot delete "empty" folders from network share. (QNAP)

Does the thumbnails data ".@__thumb" not get cleaned up when (re)moving video files? I see these files on my NAS but not under macOS (via smb). So I can only remove them from my NAS. (QNAP)

Thumbnails only appear in icon view, not list view

This could just be weirdness on my machine, but -

I'm only seeing the thumbnail previews for video files if I enter Icon View in the Finder. If I click to Icon View, the thumbnail icons will appear; if I switch back to list view, column view, or Cover Flow, the icon displayed in the file list is just whatever the generic document icon is.

version number discrepancy

i've downloaded
version 1.91
but when selecting it in the macOS Finder it reports
version 1.9.1

the difference is actually 82 semi major releases ...

1.5.0 installer does not replace 1.4.0

I had 1.4.0 installed (in /Library/Spotlight/ and /Library/QuickLook/).
I ran the 1.5.0 installer.
The installer completed.
I checked the folders; 1.4.0 was still installed.

I manually deleted 1.4.0, then retried the install. The 1.5.0 version correctly replaced it.

kMDItemVideoBitRate

kMDItemAudioBitRate is present, but not kMDItemVideoBitRate.
Could it be added? Perhaps other metadata as well, but this is the one I need! ^^

.webm not working on Sierra

Hi, webm quicklooks are not working on Sierra 10.12.6, it only shows a screenshots from the webm. Is this fixable? Can I provide more info for you, so you could fix this?

Can't preview H.265 video in .mp4 files

I converted some videos using HandBrake and the thumbnails show up on Finder, but they don't appear in the "Get Info" window and on Quick Look.

White frame in finder preview

Hi,

Info: MacBook Pro 10.13.1, QLVideo 1.90
Issue: White Frame in finder preview (please see attached screenshot).
Selecting another mkv file to preview in Finder works okay, and returning to the mkv that is previewed as "white frame" works okay again.

I have also attached the qlmanage report as requested.

Not all Videos are displayed as a static snapshot in QuickLook

Could this functionality be added to those that play a Video instead of the snapshot in QuickLook? If I want to watch the movie I open it in a player, QuickLook is used for a quick look, a static snapshot helps with that. Now I have to scrobble around inside QuickLook which is quite annoying.

Missing metadata (dimensions and duration) on existing videos

I just installed QLVideo. While it works great at generating thumbnails, I noticed that it failed to refresh the metadata (dimensions and duration) of existing videos (existing means they were already sitting there in the filesystem before I installed QLVideo). While I have the dimensions and durations for H.264 videos in MP4 containers, those metadata are missing for other videos, even including MPEG-2 videos in MPEG-TS containers, which OS X by default can partially preview (showing a static frame) and playback with QuickTime.

The missing metadata problem only applies to existing videos. In fact, moving or even touching the videos would fill in the missing metadata.

Therefore, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do with this situation? qlmanage -r was the first thing I did, so that didn't help. I also tried to log out or regenerate Spotlight index, to no avail. Of course I can touch every such video, or better yet, cook up a script to touch twice and preserve timestamps, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution?

Sorry if this is more of a question than a bug report. Anyway, I assume this issue affects everyone who has existing videos before installing QLVideo, so it would be nice to have a solution — provided that it is not a PEBKAC issue.

My current OS version is OS X 10.10.1. My version of QLVideo is 1.73. I'm attaching the required output although I don't think they are relevant in this case:

.mkv Thumb

Hey , i don't know if this is just related to me but all my .avi files are working correctly with QL in finder, i get a nice preview picture, but for .mkv files i just get the mkv thumb in finder and in GetInfo.
i am using a MacPro late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.

Play 180/360-degree videos

Please add support for 180/360-degree videos.

Just play that video file no matter what kind it is, for instance two spheres top of each other.

Since VLC and IINA (based on mpv) can play it, it's should be easy to see video playing in Quick Look too.

WebM and stability issues

I'm having various issues which I believe are related to certain WebM files.

Running:
OS X 10.9.5 (I know I'm running an almost legacy system, so don't really expect a fix, but one can always hope.)
QLVideo 1.88

I also tried to reset Finder preferences to default, with no luck.

Showing info in Finder also caused a corrupt "after image" graphics glitch where the tags text area was supposed to be on all WebM files, but instead showing seemingly random screen areas to appear in its place. An additional Finder restart solved this, so I'm not sure if it is related (it most likely is since this is the first time seeing it) or exactly what caused it.

I'm also getting a lot of the following in logs, but doesn't seem to be detrimental to use:

List view in Finder is not working either and causes the below error in logs (most likely when seeing some kind of non-working WebM). I.e. the list view freezes and current graphics on screen is "echoed" into the list view (see list_view.png) or simply large areas of empty space where files should be listed. After this QuickLook preview sometimes refuses to work at all (e.g. even raw text files or folders stop working). It either shows up blank, as saying that nothing is selected or QuickLook preview not showing up at all when triggered. I have not yet been able to identify exactly when list view freezes, however the following error shows up in icon view as well but seemingly less frequent:

Provide thumbnail screenshots for each media file - Feature Request

Hi, it would be really useful if there was an option for the screenshot associated with a media file to be made up of a grid of thumbnails from the video spread over its duration - a bit like the app 'Thumbs' does for OSX.

This would make it much easier to see the difference between clips that look similar.

Videos are displayed as a static snapshot in QuickLook previews.

Display more than one snapshot in QuickLook

Is it possible to display like 4 snapshots instead of one? Each snapshot could have a resolution like 960x540 (that's (1920/2)x(1080/2)) each snapshot from a different part of the movie like 10 seconds in, 2/4 in, 3/4 in and like 1 minute before end. This behavior would be good for movies longer than 15 minutes or something around that. And old behavior for shorter movies.

What do you think?

.PSD cropped thumbnails

On OS X El Capitan 10.11.3, QLVideo is cropping the thumbnails of very large (pixel dimension) Adobe Photoshop .psd files, they flash in to view correctly but then seem to get cropped 16:9 on white canvas.

Show video duration on QuickLook preview window title

The duration time is an important piece of metadata, which I think should be displayed in the Quick Look title bar.

An example title bar currently looks like this:

Please change it to look like this:

Enhancement request: use QLVideo also for native videos

Is it possible to let QLVideo also generate thumbnails for native videos (e.g., H.264 videos in MP4 containers)? The thumbnails generated by OS X by default seem to be the first frame. A good number of my videos begin with a black frame, or a commercial before the real program, so the first frame is often useless or even annoying. On the other hand, QLVideo seems to use a frame somewhere in the middle, which is much more reasonable. Therefore, it would be great if QLVideo also replaces the default thumbnails for native videos.

How to debug non-showing thumbnails?

I have installed this package and it some files that did not show previews now do.

Unfortunately it is not all of them. That is, some still refuse to show their thumbnail instead of their filetype icon.

How can I go about debugging this? Here is what I found in the console:

Both QuickTime and the quicklook player can play the files. They are made the same exact way as the ones whose thumbnails show.

Judging from the error messages it seems like the problem is related to sandboxing. No idea where to go from there tho. Are there permissions that need to be set/changed? Both sets of files (w/ and w/o thumbnails) are in the same directory and have the same permissions.

Show Error Preview If Generation Failed

Hi,

is there any way QLVideo could show some Placeholder Image as Preview if it wasn't able to create a preview instead of the default Finder image?

I'm always wondering if it failed or if I still have to wait for some preview image.

Removing QLVideo does not return thumbnail generation of .mp4 files to system quicklook plugin in OS 10.11

After installing QLVideo, mp4 files display as having an "MPEG-4 audio" kind when performing a "get info" from Finder, rather than the correct "MPEG-4 movie" kind.

Prior to installing QLVideo, OS 10.11 would create thumbnails and playable icon preview for .mp4 files with AAC audio and h.264 video codecs. Installing QLVideo disables this, and does not return the functionality after removing the quicklook plugin with the prescribed command, leaving the file kind as "MPEG-4 audio".

Anamorphic content not displayed correctly

HD .mkv titles

This is working well for mkv files with smaller resolutions (less than 720p around) but has trouble with mkv files of higher resolutions. For bigger mkv files, some of the thumbnails in any given directory are generated, but others keep the generic file-type icon

A way to get them to generate on 720p+ content is just navigating in and out of the directory multiple times or just restarting finder multiple times. This way still doesn't often generate all the thumbnails. What's interesting is that qlmanage -t DOES indicate that the thumbnails are being made (and even opens the thumbnails in that tiny little window) and you can even view these thumbnails with spacebar in the finder, but the thumbnails won't actually replace the generic file-type icons.

Ogg audio and video files are not supported

MPEG Videos that load in QL witout QLVideo installed, stop providing

finder image & QL playable video with QLVideo installed...I'm given an endless 'loading' animation for the finder image & a blank white document icon for the QL view.

Exclude .mp4 thumbs?

Where is the cache stored? Also, encrypted DMG issue

I was curious about a potential security issue of where the images are stored? I know Quick Look has a cache, does QLVideo store in the same place and/or elsewhere?

Also, are the images stored in a cache if one uses an encrypted DMG? From what I understand, Quick Look does not keep anything stored in cache when using Quick Look on items within a DMG. Is this the same case QLVideo?

MLV Support

Magic Lantern raw video format would benefit from QL support but instead of new project, easier to tweak here. MLV is added to ffmpeg now so soon in VLCKit. What do we need to tweak to recognise the .mlv extension?

Thumbnails not shown for MKV files

I've downloaded and installed the latest release of QLVideo.
Installed mostly to view thumbnails of MKV files in Finder.
But thumbnails are not being shown for MKV files, just getting the default blank page icon. Verified that MKV files play in VLC and other apps. Relaunched Finder, rebooted machine several times, no luck.

As suggested in the README for issue reporting, here's sample output from glmanage debugging. Any thoughts?
