Very educational and convenient for testing purposes

That would make the code simpler and probably faster (no generic lookups required)

This seems to be caused by a missing attribute_hidden before the function declaration in R's source code (see here)

On Travis, the linux builds fail if any ALTREP method is used:

unable to load shared object '/home/travis/build/MarcusKlik/lazyvec/lazyvec.Rcheck/lazyvec/libs/lazyvec.so':
  /home/travis/build/MarcusKlik/lazyvec/lazyvec.Rcheck/lazyvec/libs/lazyvec.so: undefined symbol: ALTREP_SERIALIZED_STATE

this looks like a linker problem with the ALTREP methods, which are defined in <Rinternals.h>

To avoid multiple identical messages in the console output.

Such as is already done for the length method:

# wrap ALTREP vector
y <- lazyvec::alt_wrap(1:10, "x")

# vector length
length(y)
#> x : ALTREP length : result =  integer[1] 10
#> x : ALTREP length : result =  integer[1] 10
#> [1] 10

diagnostic output is preceded by the marker (x)
