Frontend's README

It'd be nice to have a small guide (like in all other modules) that shows how to compile/build/launch the frontend module, including all preliminary steps, configuration, etc.

Board crashes when core is not available

It shouldn't simply happen. Boards should be doing something else rather than crashing, e.g., continue sniffing. This behaviormight also be useful while debugging the core server.

Boards' MAC addresses in configuration file?

I'm referring to:

  1. Create a configuration file config.json having the following format:

I am only worried that we may need to swap/add/replace boards during the exam. At that point, we should launch the board first, retrieve its MAC address from its printouts, add it to the config.json file in the core/server directory and then launch it.
It seems a bit unpractical and unscalable: @SelyBarguest can we avoid this?
What are the drawbacks of not having this pre-determined set of MAC addresses?

Device dots continuously get swapped between each other

Bug description

frontend's chart page shows devices (red dots) being continuously swapped between each other. I can confirm it is just a graphical issue: when hovering, I can see that their MAC address is still the same after the glitch.

This glitch repeats itself over time, but I cannot tell whether there is a specific event that causes red dots to get swapped.

Reproducing the glitch

This can be reproduced by replaying the bigroom/fixed-avg-rssi trace. This shows how to replay a generic trace, while this contains a description of the aforementioned trace. Please remember to use the appropriate config.json when replaying the trace (copy it to the core server directory).

Ignore frames with erroneous RSSI, a.k.a. the "outliers"

Since we personally and sporadically observed Probe Requests with an erroneous RSSI value (what we call "outliers" for brevity), we must find a way not to include these while doing statistics.
c035f4b introduces a "replayer" mode, now available at core/examples/packet_replayer: we can now emulate previous runs of the whole system thanks to a set of batches we save to filesystem.

This shows how to use the replayer, and this is the first trace we will be working on (please look at its details before starting).

Core should store all boards' meta-headers

Upon receiving the same frame from all boards, core stores only one message in the database:

Core Refactoring

Core has all the ...core functionality working right now, but some functions are not isolated enough to make any change without modifying the entire server codebase. To make an example:

The function which computes the device position takes as argument an entire map of (board_mac:board_metadata), and extracts RSSI value from there.
This makes implementing #71 harder than it has to be, because in order to compute the position over an average of positions I would have to proceed in two ways:

  • Create a fake metadata with the average of RSSI (this is hacky and could probably break something else)
  • Compute the average on positions instead of RSSI, and insert the average of positions into database. This route cannot be followed though, because for some reason the database object also accepts the entire ESP32 message in insert_message, so I cannot link an 'average of positions' to a given message, without again following hacky solutions.

I will proceed with a refactoring of the structures and functions in order to provide a bit more readability and modularity, so that we can implement new stuff on the server as fast as we can.

Manual boards calibration

Simply place boards at exactly 1 meter from a device and run an instance. Then set the average 1-meter-distance RSSI value hardcoded in each of the board's firmware.

Server configuration file

The core server should be configured via a configuration file.
For instance, it should contain:

  • IP address
  • Port
  • Boards location
  • Room dimensions (or vertexes)

Boards need to send multiple NTP requests

Problem

Some boards never receive the current date/time from the server.
I'm afraid that's because boards only send an NTP request once:

Proposed solution

Turn that if statement into a while. The sleep while should have a timeout.

Simulation mode

In order to achieve testability for everyone, we need to introduce a simulation mode that sends to the server a capture of packets (from 3 boards) previously collected.

The idea is to have a python script that can act as fake client or fake server to capture and later replicate packets.

Uncover hidden MACs

Many modern devices generate random source MACs to avoid being tracked. We need to keep this into account, and start designing/studying some heuristic to solve this.

"Unknown csi bug"

As soon as a board tries to connect to the core server, this happens:

The board gets stuck in here.
Wireshark does not show any packets being sent on my WLAN using the tcp.port == 12345 filter.
The core server is running correctly:

Core server started on port 12345.

No other printouts from the server-side.

Something is totally wrong during the connect() phase for sure, but I'm not sure which of the two parties is faulty at this point. Perhaps the core server since the board software hasn't been changed since its last working version, but we might also have forgot something from the board-side so I wouldn't be sure about it.

Connect core with frontend

The frontend module must retrieve data from the database.
The person who is currently in charge of inserting statistics in the database (I think @madt1m) should inform @suprmat95 regarding the exact data that the frontend will have at its disposal.

ESP32 promiscuous mode, format & send data

Followifier protocol

  • Either TCP or a custom UDP-based protocol to make sure that packets make their way to the destination.
  • No synchronization (#3)

Board steps

  • Activate promiscuous mode on ESP32 boards e14b3c2

Core server must work with >=2 boards

To improve the overall reliability, core should continue working even if some boards crash, as long as the total number of boards is >=2.
More specifically, we should change all these kinds of checks in the server's code:

Board out of memory

Problem

When dealing with >=64 messages in a row, boards go out of memory:

This is due to this malloc() call:

This happens because the board's firmware reallocates messages here before flushing them out:

Solution

Either we avoid this reallocation or we take care of flushing data when reaching a certain number of sniffed frames (e.g., 60).

I'd personally go for both solutions. Avoiding reallocation allows boards to store more frames in a round (thanks to smarter memory usage). Once we've achieved this, we could set a threshold of the number of messages every board can store locally before flushing them out, to avoid an out of memory exception. This threshold could be higher if we get rid of reallocation first,

Synchronize boards

Ehi there. I have studied a bit the task, and there's a number of things I am planning to do in the next PR solving this.

First of all, some context: SNTP is a simplified version of NTP, which obviously allows to gain high precision with the expense of some more computing power handy.

The most updated Request For Comments is the RFC4330. I have found some examples of how the client should be implemented:

I'll try to test them both, and see whether they work or not, and how they may be improved.

I have some doubt about how we should handle the NTP server on the other side. I guess the options are to run an NTP server in our client machine, or make all of the boards connecting to the same - external, like pool.ntp.org - NTP server - which would allow for some more robustness - and get the info from there.

Testing this will be fairly easy. We will run the client on multiple boards, and periodically disrupt the RTC (Real Time Clock) value, simulating a timebase displacement due to external conditions. In the meantime, the boards will print its current date (obviously formatted). We should be able to check how well the implementation behaves, making sure the boards agree - somewhat - on the current timestamp.

Just an important point I'd include here, is that the boards do not need to be exactly synchronized. We will use hashes to filter for packet identity, therefore timestamps will probably be employed to compute statistics. I guess we can agree on some precision we want to obtain here, so that the boards stay synchronized with AT MOST a certain desync.

This is it. I'd ask Professor Malnati some more insights on these thoughts, after having tested them a bit in my local environment.

Test monitor functionality

I guess a good idea right now would be to test monitor functionality in a controlled environment to be sure that every field of the frame is being handled correctly. A good way of doing that would be comparing what we receive in the server with what we see after a Wireshark capture, and be sure that ESP is capturing and handling frames as expected.

Core server gets stuck

Sometimes the core server gets stuck upon establishing a new connection.
It gets stuck while printing the following:

This can happen at whatever time, not just at the beginning.
The reason why this happens is still unclear to me.

Core - Number devices

Determine the number of devices in a room (PROBEREQUEST must be received by all boards) using dummy packets

core is pushing filtered packets (frames sent by all boards) into the database.

Messages buffer map

While working on the statistics I've noticed that the map for the batches has been changed. Right now we are storing the messages in a unordered_multimap

Draw UI design

It won't hurt to have a general understanding of what the UI will look like at the end of the project. We can use papers or sketching software for that. This can be used as reference while working on the frontend code.

Core's CMake project causes CLion to get stuck

Low priority
core's CMakeLists.txt file tries to allow TCP connections via iptables:

This is ok while executing cmake on the terminal, but this causes CLion (or I guess any other IDE supporting CMake) to stop upon executing a sudo command. Currently in CLion there's not even an option to insert a passoword or insert some text in general, so it won't keep going. This is frustrating especially when switching between the board project and the core one. I gotta comment these two lines every time to let it switch CMake projects. A bit annoying.

Devices out of the room are still announced

With such a room:

Is this wanted or is this a bug?

Initialize ONE_METER_RSSI constant

We need to have a constant, ONE_METER_RSSI, for our distance calculation measure. This constant could be hardcoded, but this could be problematic due to differencies between boards and the environment in which the boards are deployed. A more robust approach would be to have the server initialize those values for every board when the system first boots: for instance, one or two initial flushes could be used by the server (using some reference devices) to tune it.

Get more "active" traces

We need to place boards in a bigger environment, where we can test the precision of our formulas under greater distances. Also, having many more devices would be useful.

Server's logic: statistics

Even without direct interaction with the DB, we should write the basic statistics functionality. Right now, picking easy thing from the requirements is the way to go: I'm thinking about distance from every board, last devices connected, and others from req.
Until we have a DB connector ready, we can just save it in the heap, as objects.

Rssi to distance conversion

As continuation of issue #33 we need to do some tuning to this conversion. The position formula seems to correctly work now (99f1655) but not the conversion one.
We could try to:

  • keep changing the N and 1 meter value until we do get feasible results
  • find a new formula
  • experiment with the rssi values returned by the board to check out if they are reliable by being constant at same distances (or with a small error window)

Some other times the board seems to be getting a different default gateway by the AP at each flushing round, hence causing the connect() to fail on the usual Software caused connection abort error.

There must be something totally wrong regarding the board's event handling in followifier.c.

Drop packets that are not received from all boards

The server should only consider packets coming from all boards.
The first step could consist of determining duplicate packets and drop the ones which haven't been transmitted by all the boards.
Multiple threads/processes should take care of all boards sending data.

All the data should then eventually be stored in a sort of unique database.

Steps

  • Refractor the two ambiguous mac proto fields
  • Check whether the timestamp proto field is set by mobile devices or not
  • Check whether a message hash is computed starting from the Access Point's MAC address and timestamp

Make boards blink while running our firmware

As in #59, it might happen that some boards crash sometimes.
Even if we fix all bugs, it might be useful to make boards blink their LED (or whatever other visual proof) so that we could visually find out which boards crashed and eventually restart them.
I haven't checked whether this is actually possible or not, it's just an idea.

Core deletes traces messages

The core server deletes messages older than 5 minutes with respect to the current timestamp. This represents a problem for traces to be replayed since packets have been captured in the past.

Print boards' MAC to stdout

It'd be useful to print boards' MAC addresses to standard output more often. Right now it's only printed when flushing. It's especially useful while debugging.

Sever consider frames received during previous round

It happened with roundless mode disabled.
