cygwinportable's Issues

"bash: : command not found" in System Tool - XDG menu items

Hello,
I discovered a little strange behaviour into the Cygwin Portable application.
I try to explain it.
When I run "startxwin" from a previous open bash prompt and I use the "system tools" items from XDG menu,
(on TrayMenu items), I see the corresponding behaviour (i.e. I can see a new window with bash prompt of Mintty or UxTerm or XTerm with prompt sign '$')
On the other hand,
when I start X server with Cygwin menu (throughout "X Server" item) and after I run Xterm, Uxterm or Cygwin Terminal (mintty) (always throughout "System Tools" Menu item) ,
I can observe the terminal correct launched on own window but on the top of the prompt it appears "bash: : command not found "
So I think it can be into the batches files script a "false/spurious character" (it seems a space).
Unfortunately I am not able to check into the source.
I hope that my discovery is useful
Thanks a lot again
Regards
A

What is [.exe

I just installed CygwinPortable on a shared drive and when I check Cygwin/App/Cygwin/bin there is a "[.exe" that is 36KB. Not sure what program this is and I'm unable to run it.

I renamed it to freakyghostexe.exe and ran --help and it shows me:

  Usage: test EXPRESSION
    or:  test
    or:  [ EXPRESSION ]
    or:  [ ]
    or:  [ OPTION
  Exit with the status determined by EXPRESSION.

        --help display this help and exit
        --version output version information and exit

... blah blah blah ...

  GNU coreutils online help: <http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/>
  Report freakyghostexe translation bugs to <http://translationproject.org/team/>
  For complete documentation, run: info coreutils 'freakyghostexe invocation'

Seems like a bug? What do you think?

Additional packages not recognised

Hi, not sure if I'm missing something simple here. After I go through the Cygwin package updater, the new packages aren't recognised "command not found" if I try from a terminal launched via the taskbar icon.

However, if I launch a terminal by navigating to \CygwinPortable\App\Runtime\Cygwin\Cygwin.bat they are recognised.

So I'm just wondering if this is an issue, or a setting change that I've missed that needs to be applied after updating packages.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Crash upon start

Upon running the executable on my Windows-7 machine, I immediately get the feedback that “CygwinPortable has stopped working.”

In the event log I find two related entries. The first one is from the .NET runtime:

Application: CygwinPortable.exe
CoreCLR Version: 4.6.27121.3
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'System.Security.IStackWalk' from assembly 'System.Runtime.Extensions, Version=4.2.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'.
at System.Windows.Forms.Application.EnableVisualStyles()
at CygwinPortableCS.Program.Main() in C:\projects\cygwinportable\Source\Program.cs:line 21

The second one is the “application error” itself:

The AppVeyor link to the zipped portable version seens to be dead since AppVeyor deletes content six months after being built.

How to install behind a Proxy

I tried to install behind a Proxy Server but to no avail.
The setup.exe let me choose the Proxy.
Would it be possible to include such a Feature into CygwinPortable?

Command Line Options for Installer?

Hi,

first of all, thanks for CygwinPortable! Its a great project!

I got some questions though:

Is it possible to have the Installer, silently (no GUI) install to a specified directory? I was thinking something like this:
CygwinPortable.exe -installdir C:\cygwin -packages Default.txt -notray

As you can see I'm trying to automate the installation and would like to set the path to where it will be installed, the packages to install and it would be nice if someone could hide the tray icon.

Of course instead of showing the GUI window of the Cygwin Setup, a progress on command line would be great.

Would this be possible currently or maybe a future version?

Thanks in advance!

Installing new packages: Setup path clarification

New to Cygwin and this portable version and was looking to install the Python package within Cygwin.

It appears from a general search new packages are installed to Cygwin via the Setup (found in the tray menu), but I'm not sure which directory to install to (although Cygwin was already installed with CygwinPortable) as the pre-filled path isn't the portable path, and the CygwinPortable\App\Runtime\Cygwin directory contains a CygwinPortable binary that I'm unsure will be overwritten if re-installed to.

Essentially looking for some clarification as I couldn't find this in the readme, or a dev email to ask, and wanted to maintain portability.

Installing 64-bit version

Hi, cannot get it to install 64-bit version no matter what I try. Please provide instructions on how to do it.

Cannot bypass UAC

When trying to launch cygwin portable, windows asking for admin rights. Is this really a portable app?

Cygwin Portable cannot be started. You may wish to re-insstall to fix this.

Hello, when I download the PAF or 7z file and try to run it I get:
image

The README.md states:

"""
First Start

Start CygwinPortable.exe - The setup.exe is download automatically
Choose x86/x64 Version
Let the cygwin install (defaults are cygwin defaults + vim,wget,tar,gawk,bzip2 packages)
Enjoy Cygwin :-)
"""

Please note if I download the older packages with cygwin already downloaded it works.

Why is User-Directory fixed?

I dont understand why the user is fixed in the expert settings of the tray? There are some problems with that, for example using ssh and the .ssh directory in home dir, because it is searching in a directory for the running user. Is there a possibility to set it to the running windows user ?

McAfee warning about Artemis!179A468B6D42

I know its a failure from McAfee, but i tryed to use Cygwin Portable at work, i dont have admin right's so its hard to do any at this computers.
McAfee flagged this as Artemis and delete CygwinPortable.exe, so no chance to use this software for people they try do work at a station without any permissions.

Cannot change user rx permission on Windows8!

For some reason I cannot change user's read/execute permissions on a new install based on "CygwinPortable_1.2.0.0_x64.paf.exe"

No make

Hi, how do I add make to it?

Looking for a x86 version of cygwin

I download after reinstall of Debian 21.15 for IA64 and Windows Vista 32 the development tools from:

https://github.com/BeitDina/webfont/blob/windows/develop/binanies_drivec_win32.zip

Then I did tested your portable version of Cygwin and said that is not designed to be used with my version of Windows.

After downgrade to cygwin-builds-master.zip (04.10.2010) I did get this error from woff2_decompress.exe "The procedure enty point __cxa_atexit could not be located in the dynamic link library cygwin1.dll".

I have no access to the old hard drive and have not noted what version of cygwin I used to compile woff2.

Can't run X applications?

Hi everyone,
I installed xorg-server and xinit with apt-cyg. Then use the following command
to run xterm.

XWin :0 -clipboard -multiwindow
DISPLAY=:0.0 xterm

Nothing shows up, "ps -e | grep X" also doesn't show anything.
What is wrong?
Thank you for your help.

awk executable wrong format

Hi.

I have just installed the Portable Apps version from here as you described in the readme.

That fresh install fails to execute awk since /usr/bin/awk is an ASCII text file. I'm sure this can be easily reproduced by doing a fresh install and executing file $(which awk) on bash. This prevents for using apt-cyg for example.

I have fixed it by reinstalling awk through cygwin setup manager.

apt-cyg need update

Cygwin mirror sites change their directory structure, and original apt-cyg doesn't work on them anymore.
patch edition for new cygwin mirror site structure can be find here(https://github.com/rcmdnk/apt-cyg), I have test it works fine(but not test for xz compress).

Example Files?

I would like to have some example files as compiling the app and starting it leads to errors right away (missing Packages folder), creating it leads to another error cause the folder just created is empty and the program is expecting a filled array with txt files...

DirectoryInfo diSource = new DirectoryInfo(Globals.AppPath + "\\DefaultData\\Packages");
            foreach (FileInfo fi in diSource.GetFiles())
            {
                comboBox_packages.Items.Add(fi.Name.Replace(".txt",""));
            }
            comboBox_packages.SelectedIndex = 0;

Some documentation or example files to understand perfectly how it works would be nice

Cygwin Portable cannot be started!!
