when holding down a key to skip/select dialogue performance is severely affected

I took a look through the code and the most likely culprit is the timers being created
I would suggest not making a new timer if a timer was created recently as a fix

This plugin does work with 'Key remapping' -plugin. It overrides chat box with "Press Enter to Chat" which requires to press enter before typing. This also requires re-press enter to "exit" chat box. After clearing the chat box, the box is still active, so dialogue shortcuts wont work for example.

Pretty easy to fix, just make this plugin to press enter after clearing the chat box.
