resources's Issues

Convert markdown resources to Jekyll web pages

Summary

Create Jekyll website in GitHub Pages to provide an easy-to-navigate web interface

Background

Currently we are storing knowledge as markdown files in this git repo. This is easy for us to maintain and also gives us a fixed place to link out in other places. However, a simple Jekyll site would improve reader experience and hopefully give our content a more professional look-and-feel.

Details

The scope for this should be small, to almost function as a small wiki. The main focus is to host written content that is most useful to LibreCorps team members, but could also be helpful as a resource for cohorts we work with. A secondary priority would be a broader, wider audience who may find this resources useful.

Also we need to choose a license, but I'll open a new issue for that.

Outcome

  • 3rd priority: UX does not change for maintainers to add/edit/remove content (as markdown files with headers)
  • 2nd priority: Better experience/appearance for cohorts using our resources to inform their processes
  • 1st priority: Possibly easier to attract publicity as a helpful resource in future outreach efforts

Choose a Creative Commons license for content

Summary

Choose a license to make our written content more free

Background

Our notes and written resources do not have a license. Therefore, by default they fall under individual copyright. The Creative Commons licenses are good picks for creating and sharing knowledge works.

Details

I suggest the CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International. This license permits changes to be made to our work and reshared provided the remixed content is licensed the same. It also forbids commercial use of this work without prior permission. I felt like this was a useful protection of our work since we are publishing this freely and also working with large commercial entities via LibreCorps.

Outcome

Easier for others to read, use, change, and redistribute our content under a mostly-free license

Automate GitHub Pages build with Travis CI

It's possible to have Travis CI automatically deploy new builds of the site to GitHub pages without committing static content to this repository. Doing this will make this repository easier to work on and also solicit external contributions.
